I've looked at those mounts and they never seemed to hold zero in my experience. The best way is to drill and tap it.

That is what I was fearing.

being a mauser chassis, there might be side mount kits available.

If I put a scope on it, I will tap it and do the job properly.

Braden, I think the long (extended) eye relief scope is a good relatively inexpensive solution to mounting a scope on a 98. I haven't done it on a rifle, but I have used long/extended eye relief scopes on handguns for a long time. I have a Burris Extended Eye Relief 3-9x on a 223 Contender barrel that will hit things at 100 that you can't see without the scope.

It is an Enfield Jungle carbine chambered in 7.62X51 Nato. It was manufactured at the Ishapore arsenal in 1960. It was bought in new condition about 12 or 13years ago for about $180. It is the hardest kicking rifle that I have shot. The stock is too small for me. It fits the owner well, he is about 5'8" and 140#. He can shoot dozens of rounds through it with no ill effect. I stand 6'0" and 185# and 5 shots are all I want to shoot it.

here's my No. 4 Mk. 1 when i got it, it had been kinda sporterized, and had a cheesy dovetail mount and airgun reflex sight on it.

just yesterday i finished putting a sythetic stock and an actually sturdy scope mount on it, along with a BSA catseye 4-16 x 44.

My son has a Red Rider sitting under the tree right now. Luckily for him I bought a set of Mini shooting glasses, so he won't shoot his eye out
