Since there are a bunch of gun nuts here, I have a couple of non-important questions. Is there an advantage of the .17HRM over .22mag? Can you fire .22 long rifle shells in a .22mag? That is all.

2) No.

Well, you can, but it's dangerous.

While .22 WRF may be fired in a .22 WMR, firing a .22 S, L or LR in a .22 WMR firearm will likely result in gas leakage at the breech and may cause a potentially dangerous case rupture.

yes, shooting 22LR in a 22mag chamber would be a bad idea, like even more so than shooting shorts ina 22lr chamber

I'd stick to a .22LR. If the velocities of a .17 thrill you, get CCI's "Stingers" and cal it a day.

I've seen it claimed that .17HRM has a flatter trajectory than any .22 (Not saying it's true, just saying) so I know some guys who use it for critter hunting. But honestly, I've rarely seen it used that it made a difference.

As for .22L, .22LR. and .22S it depends. Some guns can fire them all (See: http://www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-lever-action.cfm). However .22 Mag is a different ball game all together. (See: http://www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-lever-magnum.cfm). But, .22 Mag is sort of eh. I don't see the point of it. .22L/LR/S is dirt cheap, moves fast enough, and is reasonably accurate.

I have one, bought it for a pittance when they stopped making ammo for it, thinking of converting it to something else. Never got around to that but that's OK. They're making ammo for it again. Sweet shooting gun.

Speaking of that, I found .220 Swift rounds on the shelf at a store. Yes. Never, ever thought I would.

In Montana.

Never understood the 17 rimfire mania. Didn't see any significant ballistic advantage to justify the extra cost. They're generally 100 yard cartridges, regardless.

If you want a stupid example of that sort of thing, I've got a 1903 Winchester auto I inherited from my dad. Ammo's about $.15/round and ballistics are about the same as the 22 WRM.

17HMR is mostly for people who are obsessed with velocity and trajectory. It's silly, cause like I said it doesn't do anything .22lr can't do, or .22Mag for that matter. I know a few guys who swear by them for Jack rabbit and prairie dog hunting.

I thought prairie dogs needed a 308 or 22-06 or things like that.

Now, 22 Hornet, that's a nice snappy little round. If you want the next thing up from a 22 mag, that's where you need to go.
