HAPPY SOLSTICE!

The sun will rise at 10:58am (about half an hour from when I post this) and set at 2:40pm, for a length of day of 3 hours and 41 minutes. Tomorrow will be a full 19s longer! Woohoo hail to the returning sun!

To put that in perspective, here's a timelapse from UAF taken on December 2nd 2012, when the day was about 45 minutes longer...

And for some reading amusement, the winter of 1989. I've heard some crazy stories about that winter from people who lived here through it. A friend worked at a hotel downtown said they had to tell everyone staying there to keep their room doors open with the heat fully cranked. If anyone shut their door, the room wouldn't get enough heat to stay above freezing and the pipes would freeze up.

From Homer to Barrow, the temperatures fell each day. Fairbanks experienced six consecutive days where the high temperature was no warmer minus-40. On Jan. 25, much of the state received a light break when a storm system in the Gulf of Alaska stirred the air over the state somewhat. In Fairbanks it warmed to 33 below.

skierd, you're still in Alaska? I thought you were thinking of moving south?

I was but didn't get the job. Wife and I are staying for a few more years, Fairbanks really has been just too good for us.

My wife is out doing solstice yoga, which apparently involves 100 sun salutations, whatever those are.
