I currently have a dumb thermostat. Set the temperature and it keeps it there.

I want something I can program on a schedule.

I DO NOT want a smart, Wi-Fi connected, learning, Bluetooth enabled piece of E36 M3.

I want something that I can set say 65 from midnight to 6am, 72 from 6am to 5pm, and 75 from 5 to midnight.

That's all the functionality I want, that's all the functionality I would accept even if it cost more.

So what do you have, what's the hive like for this?

Ive been down this road before. I purchased 3, after the first 2 were quite garbage. I bought this honeywell thermostat, and don't have any complaints. Programming isn't exactly easy, but thats the fault of having 4 buttons. unless they are wifi, none are going to be a breeze to program. That honeywell is more expensive than most programmables, but you get what you pay for.

I replaced it with a nest last week. holy crap they are awesome.

Before going Nest I had a couple cheapo programmables. I think one was that Honeywell. Never had any trouble with either one. Just go to the box store of your choice and pick one you feel like paying for.

Honeywell T6 is what we install.

Pretty easy to set up.

Yup.  Honeywell.  Some of them are a royal pain to program, but they get the job done just fine.

Have you considered a smart, Wi-Fi connected, learning, Bluetooth enabled thermostat?

This honeywell wss recommended by a friend who just replaced all his stuff in November. Looks like a cheaper, harder to program version of the one linked above.

At least Honeywell is usually a good brand. Thanks for the advice

I had one of those Honeywell.  They worked fine, slightly better than a dumb thermostat, but god help you if you lose the battery backup and have to set it up again.

You will of course have that happen because that's life, then it's like programming the time on a microwave, except you're doing that for 7 days a week for how many different time breaks they have in the day.

The WiFi enabled ones are soooo much easier to configure and guess what?  You don't have to use the WiFi on it except if you need to reconfigure it.

Our current setup is tied into our alarm system and I can monitor/configure it remotely and it can earn us if things are too hot or too cold, etc.  there are "macros" we can build to do things based on certain triggers, etc.

Sometimes being a curmudgeon is warranted.  Other times it's just being a cranky Luddite.  I think this is former rather than the latter.
