I keep a plastic box in the 'rolla's trunk with most of the tools and spares inside. This greatly decreases the trunk noise when driving on the street and keeps my stuff dry from the leaky trunk.
Around noon today I discovered that an oil bottle in there was only 99.5% tight and about 5-8tbsp of oil had escaped.
I've been cleaning it up ever since. I think I'm going to have nightmares about oil spills tonight, it's driving me crazy. I've got everything that was inside cleaned now except the jumper cable kit which I think may be a lost cause, and the container itself which I'm almost ready to give up on as well.
And this isn't the first time I've had a trunk oil spill.
My strategy before was to keep the oil bottle 100% tight (only has to go wrong once) and keep it inside a bag just in case (didn't help that much). I'd think about using a ziploc bag but I had a few in this same box and only about half kept the oil out. Tips?
Stick some to the side of the box, some to the oil bottle. It'll hold it upright. Industrial strength Velcro might work too.
I had this problem too, but I had a big jug of oil just loose in the trunk that lost maybe almost a quart over a period. I had to replace the trunk carpeting. I find some oil jugs dont tighten particularly well, you could try transferring it to a container that won't leak. Also pack the box full so the oil bottle cant move around inside the box
I have one of these things:
It has Velcro on the back so it will stick to the carpet trunk liner. It works great. I got mine as a door prize so I'm not sure what the BMW dealer charges for them, but I'd think that you could find something similar at an auto parts store.
You're such a lightweight
Try 2 GALLONS of used veggie oil in the trunk! Yup, I filled my tank and left the cap off. You can just make out the fill cap above the word "oil".
I can't use the velcro idea (which I think is a good one) so, besides actually putting the fill cap on the tank I make 100% sure the jugs are tight and that they are packed in in such a way so they can't topple over.
Cut the top off of a coolant jug and use it as a bottle holder.
I am on the 2-stroke oil plan with my Mazda and I have one stuck behind the driver's seat to hold the oil bottle and funnel.

That's what I do in my Samurai. No place to bungee in the Toyota though and I want to keep my stuff dry from any leaks.
keep the oil in the garage and check the level when you are home?
that's always worked for me, except for one car that burned a lot of oil, but i didn't worry too much about the gallon antifreeze jug full of drain oil i kept in the trunk leaking everywhere in that particular car because it was a rusted out POS and the oil was acting as a preservative.
tighten the cap all the way. Take Etape and wrap tightly around the cap and neck of the bottle..
Much better than having the exxon valdez moored in your trunk
