Northern Water Snakes are very bitey, but harmless. Odds are good he's going to eat a bunch of stuff you don't want around, anyhow.

They *will* try to bluff you by flattening their heads, too. Here is a picture of one trying to convince me it was venomous. Her round pupils gave her away, despite her best efforts.

I was thinking it might be a pine snake:

UPDATE:

I submitted the photo to the Connecticut Fish and Wildlife agency. Here’s what they had to say:

From CT Fish and Wildlife:

What you have there is actually a young northern water snake. Juvenile racers, rat snakes, and water snakes look fairly similar, but notice how the banding pattern travels down either side of the snake's body. Juvenile rat snakes instead have "splotches" seen along the back. Thank you for sharing. Would you allow us to possibly use this photo for a future snake Saturday post?

Interesting, my last snake sighting was on a Saturday.

Here is a Kingsnake that was exploring in my yard. He is a cool dude, he was checking out all the crevices around the patio. He was quite the mellow fellow, not intimidated or threatened by me at all.

Note: totally could have been a "she", I did not inspect the nethers.

Found the first one of the year today, dead when I found it, near the creek in my yard. Not really sure how it died, it's upside down on top of a bunch of brush. My guess is it drowned in the recent storms and wound up getting washed up there. Frankly, I don't care. Only good snake is a dead snake as far as I'm concerned.
