Horror movies

I'm not big on horror films as they either don't work on me or they work too good on me

Having said that, here are three classics I remember from my youth that haven't been mentioned yet...

31 disappointed me. I feel like I saw the best parts in the trailer. It really should have just been the Doom-Head movie.

My now wife rented that to watch on our 3rd date. My now Mother in law was watching with us, 2 hours of uncomfortable silence.......

about 10 years later my wife out of the blue says, why didn't anyone just turn it off 5 mins in?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Cube series. 

Motel Hell

Scary movies don't really scare me anymore. Zombies, ghosts, etc, all that stuff isn't real. You can't shoot a mental patient 47 times and have him get up and walk off (Friday the 13th), or have one inhabit your dreams (Nightmare on Elm Street). 

The one scary movie that REALLY messed with me.................The Strangers. Because a group of psychopaths could actually show up at your door and do something horrible.

The Purge is similar in that way, but it's a bit cheesy and far-fetched to actually get riled up.

Virus - I think I've seen this and I think I remember enjoying it.

Cemetery Man and One Hour Photo - Haven't seen these, though I've heard of OHP.  Maybe more thriller than horror?  Not a bad thing.

Basket Case - a classic.  Haven't seen it since about 1985, but it's a treat of stop motion animation.  Worth watching just for the doctors' names.  If you like BC also check out The Manitou - starring a few people who should have known better.

Maximum Overdrive and Christine - seen em.  Not bad, but Stephen King never seems to translate well into film.  And yes, I feel that way about The Shining, too.  I hate that movie.  Mostly a fan of his books, though.

Human Centipede - never seen it but, while we don't mind some gore, we're more about tension and atmosphere rather than gross-out porn.

The Skeleton Key - IMDB profile looks promising.  I like Peter Saarsgard and John Hurt.  Sounds like we should try this one.

Babadook - Very good, agreed.

Rob Zombie's stuff - I've seen Devil's Rejects and Halloween and at least one other.  DR was pretty good; Halloween was perfectly competent but unnecessary.  I'm not a huge fan of remakes in general.

Mandy - not familiar with this one, but any time I see Nicolas Cage's name I think of Abed's oral report on Nicolas Cage from Community.

The Conjuring, and any sequels, tie ins - yeah, these are all pretty solid, as well as the Insidious series which also stars Patrick Wilson.  That tends to make them all blend together for me, but they're all decently scary.

The Grudge - yeah, both the original and the American remake are good.  Atmosphere counts.  Grudge wins out over The Ring and the other Americanized Japanese horror flicks on that count.

The Hills Have Eyes - both versions also good.  The problem is, since the remake, you never see the original any more.

28 Days Later - solid, as is the sequel.

Dead Alive - I know of this because it was close to being Peter Jackson's debut.  Don't think I've seen it, though.

The Babysitter - Don't know this one; I'll check it out.

The Final Girls - I think I've seen this, and I think I enjoyed it.  I hope I'm not thinking of Final Girl.

I Saw The Devil, Inside, Raw, Baskin, and Martyrs - Martyrs is the only one of these I have heard of, and it is highly recommended.  Looks like there is a French original and an American remake of Inside.  Raw looks pretty promising too.  I like Byung-hun Lee so maybe we'll check out ISTD too.  Thanks.

Trollhunter - I enjoyed that and I really wanted the Landie in it.  It put DW to sleep.

The Exorcist / The Exorcist II - the original was great, the sequel was meh.  I think there is a much later prequel, too.

Blair Witch Project - Very good, good enough to be forgiven for bringing the whole shaky-cam thing to popularity.  I especially like the way the movie was made, with almost no script and real reactions.  I'm familiar with that geographic area, too, which helped.

Amityville Horror - who doesn't like a good Catholic possession movie?  Both versions are solid.

Pumpkinhead - a SyFy channel Halloween week classic.  Disposable but fun.

The Cube series - I've seen 1 and 2.  Decent, but not enough back story; a little too abstract.  Maybe that's the point.  Good use of very limited budgets, though.

Motel Hell - hell yeah.

The Girl With All The Gifts - yeah, that was good.

The Strangers - yeah, pretty good too.  There's a similar one that came out about the same time except it's a family, not just a vacationing couple.  It's also pretty good but the title escapes me.

The last horror movie I watched that genuinely scared me was The Babadook- it's psychological cranked to the 11s that has almost no gore and a great ending. I can't really explain any further because I'd spoil the movie.

Haven't seen a zombie flick that was worth anything since 28 Days Later. Mandy was amazing per my friends- I couldn't see it because COVID fired up- and apparently it's a man steadily turning into either Doomguy or Nicholas Cage depending on your outlook.

Honestly? Horror movies suck after the start of the gore-porn craze after Saw 3. 

EDIT: I Saw the Devil is very good too and plays with your expectations real well! Reminds me that I still have to see Parasite.

There's only been two of recent memory that ping my radar- 

The den- it's a psychological thriller to be sure and it's a really kinda scary deal. Like I was genuinely freaked out after watching it. 

Vile- interesting twist on the gore porn genre. 

There's also Would you Rather- definitely leans into the gore side, but it's in interesting premise, and 13 sins- sort of along the same lines. 

Of course the scariest movie I've ever seen, a man's wife is murdered shortly after she gives birth, leaving him with one crippled offspring. Years of paranoia and closet living come to a head when his son is kidnapped during a school outing and he's got to follow a mentally challenged stranger across great lengths in the slim hope of getting his kid back alive.  

I am of course talking about.....finding Nemo. 

Maybe not strictly horror: The Hitcher. Man, Rutger Hauer scares the E36 M3 out of me.

Yeah, the original is excellent and as usual the remake was fine but totally unnecessary.  Hauer in that movie scares the crap out of DW.

The "Haunting of Hill House" on Netflix is a good ghost story 10 episode series.

Someone earlier mentioned the more plausible a horror scenario it is, the scarier it is to them. I'm the opposite. I'm OK with zombies, evil hillbillies, purge night folk, etc. because I understand the rules. You shoot them in the face, they die. It's simple, and I like my world to have simple rules.

It's the supernatural stuff that gets me. The Conjuring? Oh hell naw. I'm out. Creepy doll can have the house.

Evil Dead and it's sequels haven't been mentioned yet?  Cult classics! The remake was decent too.

My friends and I made a drinking game out of Dead Alive. We made it 30 min before we were all blasted. "Your mother ate my dog!"

Loved Cabin in The Woods.

Death Note was interesting. 

13 Cameras and 14 Cameras were creepy because I can easily see it happening. 

The original From Dusk to Dawn was great. Awesome twist from Q.T.

As Above So Below kept me entertained too.

I also liked the Silent Hill movies.

I haven't seen it, but based on the trailer I would call it Horror, overlapping with Thriller probably.  

Supernatural horror movies for the most part do nothing for me:  Conjuring, Insidious, Paranormal Activity, all make next to no sense.  A lot of the zombie stuff is so bad it really fails to "elicit fear for entertainment purposes" so its not really Horror to me.  Evil Dead maybe.  Army of Darkness is basically action/comedy.

I appreciate the ones grounded closer in reality.  Simple rules, but real scenarios you could see playing out.

There's one I've watched a few time now on Netflix, I think it's called "holidays". It's a bunch of horror shorts based on the yearly holidays. Really really well put together. Some, like mothers day, are really intense. 

American Mary was another good one, more gore, but a fantastic leading lady. I think she actually wound up in Babadook, which I thought was a waste of time. 

XX is a short compilation all written and directed by women. Some are great, some not so great, but a good way to spend an hour plus. 

I've been trying to remember the title to a psychological thriller I loved but I can't place it. A husband falls into a coma, and it takes place inside his head, with his fears and visions while under. Very heavy, slightly scary to me because I found it shortly after my dad came out of a similar situation.

Late edit: 3 From Hell, the final part of that particular Rob zombie trilogy, was a fitting ending. More action movie than horror, but to see Captain Spalding one last time was just great. I miss Sid Haig? Hague?

American Mary was berkeleyin weird. I did like some of the more obscure Urban myths they used (arm swap anyone?) I fell asleep during the babadook. I don't intend on trying again

Also, it is described as a horror series, but I think that is misleading, but if you haven't seen it you may like Stranger Things. 

Well no one else touched on it so I will. 

The first human centipede was and is a rather disgusting concept. But, I think, it was very well executed, from Zee German to the victims, I think the actors did a very good job, and the cinematography was excellent.

The second one and third one seemed like low budget jokes of the first one to me, and honestly aren't worth watching. 

I don't recommend the first one if you have a weak stomach or are disturbed by graphic surgery and completely twisted situations. If you can handle those things, it's worth the watch. 

Just pretend 2 and 3 don't exist.
