Just got back from our local pub and imbibed a little alcohol. I now have a case of the hiccups. What's your cure?
Controlled slow breathing. Really focus on control. Hiccups are usually an irritated vagus nerve and the longer/more you hic the harder they can be to shake.
let a packet of sugar dissolve completely on your tongue. body focuses on breaking down the sugar.
Not recommended for diabetics.
My surefire way works 100% of the time for me.
Get a big glass of water. Hold breath. Drink water very slowly, swallowing as soon as there's enough water in your mouth to swallow, say once every 2 seconds or so. Do it as long as you can. By the time I need to take a breath, the hiccups are gone. If they come back, repeat as necessary.
Friend of mine had the hiccups. Wouldn't stop. I said "Want me to scare you? (looking over his shoulder) There's (name of his ex wife)." He said "That doesn't scare me." I said "And there's her mother. (waving) Hi (name of his ex MiL)!" His hiccups stopped.
When my 8 month old daughter gets hiccups, i just give her a little bit more formula or water and they go away..
Drink water from the backside of the cup. It's easier that it sounds and has never failed me.
Fill a glass with water. Hold out in front of you and start bending over. You put you mouth of the back side of the glass and start drinking, tipping the glass slightly toward your face. Take 10 sips. I can even do it on a water fountain now.

Thanks. I did this last night and it worked. It's been a long time since I've had hiccups. I'll remember to do this if it ever happens again. And thanks to everyone for all the other solutions as well!

works every time. I am of the dry sugar camp.
Mental Floss Article said: Almost all cures are based on one of two principles. One type works its magic by overwhelming the vagus nerve with another sensation. The vagus nerve is a cranial nerve that innervates the stomach and conveys sensory information about the body's organs to the brain. When distracted by overwhelming information of another sort, it basically tells the brain that something more important has come up and the hiccuping should probably be stopped (vagus nerve stimulation is also used to control seizures in epileptics and treat drug-resistant cases of clinical depression). The other method for curing hiccups is to interfere with breathing, increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood, and causing the body to focus on getting rid of the of the CO2 and not making hiccups. Swallowing a spoonful of sugar is probably the most commonly prescribed hiccup cure and falls in the first category. A teaspoon of sugar is usually enough to stimulate the vagus nerve and make the body forget all about the hiccups. Even ardent supporters of the sugar cure disagree if the sugar should be taken dry or washed down with water, though.
Having your wife/significant other/recent attractive female acquaintance perform an act upon your person will, in my experience, cause the hiccups to go away. At worst, you'll still have them but you'll stop caring about them for a while.
I use the principle of CO2 buildup.
Take a breath. Let it halfway out. Hold it for as long as you can. Repeat if necessary.
