Depends on the type of fart. http://www.fartnames.com/

You misunderstood. I am not looking for fart names. I'm asking how to spell the sound a fart makes. There's a difference, you know.

I know, but depending on the fart, there is a different sound, hence different smell...er...spelling. Is it a rrrrrriippppptttt or a ssssshhhhttthhpppp?

...or I could go all "Airplane" about it and say

"t-h-e s-o-u-n-d a f-a-r-t m-a-k-e-s"

The most audible sound I am aware of is the sound of a person across the room saying, "Ewww, who cut the cheese?"

It definitely depends on the fart.

I know there are some that just go "Psssshhhhhh"

Mine are either completely silent and the sound is indirect, represented mostly of others softly gagging, flapping their arms or swearing. Sometimes when seated on a hard flat surface though, the escaping hot, damp air plying itself between a cheek and the chair can produce a muted sound best represented by extending the Schwa sound as follows: ƏƏƏƏƏƏƏƏƏƏƏƏ

Was that helpful?

I'm also curious if the sound changes if you ignite it while in progress? I conducted experiments in this area back in college, but I was never able to get the timing right. Then there was the beer factor...

Impossible, you farted. That's all that needs said. It could be a sneaky one that brought some brown with it though. Might want to check that.

In a bathtub, pool, or hot tub the sound is "burr-duck" ... at least that's from my experience. Used to know a guy in high school named Burdock and he used to get busted up about his name sounding like a fart in the bathtub.

By the way, this is a much more upbeat and humorous topic than the one you started last week. We hope that's an indication that you have resolved the issue and are in better spirits.

Can't spell it but there is an app for fart sound.

Well that's really special, but let's try to stay on topic, k?

Yes, it makes a "fwoomp" sound when ignited like any other flammable gas.

Well yes, that's the easy part. But how does that differ from the sound just before ignition?

In reply to GameboyRMH:

You know, now that I think about it, the experiments I conducted in college did not have results consistent with what you are stating. My hunch is that there was not enough oxygen present in the burn to produce this "fwoomp" sound you speak of.

Before ignition it sounds the same, one sound is heard alongside the other and is louder. Think of the pfrrrrt as engine noise and the fwoomp as antilag explosions

Except that is not what happened in our experiments. Maybe you should conduct your own experiments and report back.
