At least most of the supplies we will be getting will be usable for a long time. Spam, dry foods, rum. You know, the basics. Have a small propane stove for when the power goes out. Our power company, FPL, has done a lot to improve their infrastructure down here. Main power lines in front of my house were recently upgraded from old wood to huge concrete ones. That was fun to watch. 60' pole dangling from a crane. Funny, my business is on hold for the duration. Of course we have many clients in Jamaica and Bahamas. Don't think I will hear from them for a while.

If you're going to be around the week of Thanksgiving I would love to have a drink with you.
My sister is just off of Hilton Head island and is already making plans to bug out to my other sisters place in TN. She don't need around with storms.

Back from supply run, it was just what I expected. Spent 88.00 at the Dollar Store. That took some doing. Gas station was a zoo, cars back out on the street. Main grocery was not bad, but already out of water. Did not pick up any bad vibes yet. Yet.
Good luck Floridians!
We don't get hurricanes here in Ky, it's tornadoes for us. Different sort of wind and causes a lot of fatalism about their likelihood of hitting. They do seem to hate poor people as well though.

Unlike Hurricanes though, you cannot tornado proof a house.

^^LOL
I was thinking after I posted that, a concrete structure probably would be pretty tornado proof. But unlike a hurricane, you can't really build a "normal" house with provisions to withstand a tornado like you can an "average" hurricane; providing that your house isn't hit by another house in said average hurricane.
I'd rather take my chances in a tornado than a hurricane because in a tornado, there is a very good chance you don't get hit even if your next door neighbors do. But if I KNEW I was going to get hit, I'd take the hurricane.
INterestingly, I think Florida has more tornados than Illinois (and yes, I've been very close to one in Illinois)

Sure you can!
I just wanna live in a bunker anyhow. I've actively searched for missile silos in the past.
In reply to mtn:
We actually do get more tornadoes than IL, but they are usually just little guys--- not the big mean tornadoes you get in the Midwest. We also have more lighting strikes than any other state--- which makes for some great light-shows. (and freaked out dogs!)
I guess we are due. There hasn't been a hurricane in the Daytona area since 2004--- so hopefully Matthew will be easy on us. Regardless, this is one to take seriously. I'll be on my roof later this evening fixing a leak before the skies open up!
In reply to mndsm:
Same here. Our house is cement block construction with few, small windows, set 5' up in the wall. It truly feels like a bunker & we love it.

In my travels to the islands, I have seen that a LOT of the homes of fairly affluent folks are built with solid concrete walls, roof, even interior walls. Those will stand up to almost any storm. On the other hand, the poor folk live in shacks built from corrugated sheets. Those will self destruct when hit by any real wind.

Well, it's a man date then. See you in November.
This is a rather inopportune time for this storm to come visit. I had a mountain camping trip planned. Had, being the operative word.
It's looking like the rest of the week is knackered as well. The Governor is reversing the eastbound lanes of I-26 for the rest of the week. I-95 is liable to look like someone kicked a ant hill for the foreseeable future. I'll be lucky to get any work done.
If this thing hits here at it's current strength, next week is truly going to SUCK. The only thing worse than the idiocy of people preparing for these, is trying to clean up the mess afterward.
All that glued in, impact glass, that people think doesn't break, breaks. Replacing it is going to be a NIGHTMARE.

It would be a lot of fun to put a Police call box at the top of that shaft
Apparently, seismic science has advanced to the point where our Californian overlords have decided to start providing earthquake advisory notices. I live in Ventura (~30 miles North of Los Angeles) and I was under my first advisory until midnight last night.
Nothing happened (oh Specificity vs Sensitivity you art a wicked, wicked nemesis) but it’s nice to know when you probably shouldn’t be doing things like working under the car.
berkeley, no school bus runs tomorrow for my kids The State is taking them to get people off the coast of SC. Thursday sure but tomorrow WTF. A lot can happen in 24 hours to shift the hurricane away from land. So that means it's going to be a ZOO at the school with hundreds of parents trying to drop off and pick up their kids the rest of the week.
Head west on I-10 and take a right on I-59 in Houston. The Grosh is ready for refugees. A little further than you might want to go, but come on, it's the Grosh.
Stay safe.
My basement is 900 sqft and available in Minneapolis. A little Far. I know.
We bailed on going to see Clutch tonight so we can get ready. Our house is frame with 2.5-story windows up front, but at least we can clean gutters, stock up supplies, do laundry and, of course, turn as much editorial as possible before the power goes out.
Let us hope it's not as bad as predicted.

It truly would be bigger on the inside.
While cleaning my gutters, I banged my head. No harm, no foul, right? Just realized that there's a bloody bump on the top of my scalp. Yuck.
