USA Today article

The sales part is interesting, but this part would make me avoid Hyundai in the future, even though I use Amazon music and Audible:

"Other aspects of the multi-year partnership include a hands-free Alexa experience in Hyundai cars in 2025 to not only play audiobooks and music but also manage their Amazon smart home tools when they’re on the road. "

What is your problem with that feature? That's something that your phone can already do. Seems reasonable that you would want the ability when driving home to adjust your thermostat, turn on the porch lights, and start preheating the oven for dinner.

The potential issues for this that I see are the ones that are already inherent to having a networked "smart home". If you don't want to avoid those issues, don't set your house up as a "smart home".

The potential issues I see are the cybersecurity risks, potential for obsolescence, exclusivity limitations (will this limit use of other smart home integration), and potential added subscription for internet connectivity in the vehicle. The exclusivity issue is one I've experienced first hand. I needed to recently change from fireTV devices to Roku because Amazon and Spectrum don't get along.

As an example, my wife's Kia has the UVO interface. While it's cool that it has a lot of functionality, it's an added subscription just to be able to use the remote start feature. Which then depends on internet connectivity for the vehicle and the phone app to work. I would estimate >95% of the time a remote start triggered from the key fob would be adequate.

I'm also not really in favor of someone driving next to me on the highway trying to preheat their oven, turn on the living room lights, and adjust the thermostat while  doing 80 mph.

I'm ready for Amazon to BOMBARD me with targeted ads based on my search and comment history.

Cybersecurity from a brand that has documented issues stemming from thumbdrive vehicle thefts stemming from TikTok videos is the least of their concerns. Amazon has 100s of millions of credit card numbers on file. If someone wants to hit Amazon for digital security and theft, it's not going to be for a vehicle. It's going to be for tens of millions of dollars via millions of transactions under $5 each.

My concern would be that I wouldn't feel comfortable purchasing aftermath parts as Amazon purchases history from other sites. It'd have to stay stock unless I wasn't planning on using the warranty any longer.

Yup, that's going to be a headache.

No kidding, this would be a privacy nightmare. However, we're not the type of people to whom this venture is targeted.

Are they going to give my driver a catapult to lob it on to my porch roof?

Maybe this means you can have a Hyundai stolen off your front porch.

That's the thing to me, their response to the Hyundai/Kia challenge tiktok stuff has made me not view their brand at all favorably. The fact they built them with the security flaws to their "do I have to??" Response.....  I'll shop elsewhere.

The Santa Cruz was tempting, but this was a major factor that got it scratched from consideration.
