Everyone's got a vice. No one's clean. People need something to make em tick. Booze, smokes, collectibles, pleasurable company. It's all in how you want to spend your life.

I enjoy an alcoholic drink or two now and again. Like, 1-2 a month on average.
I don't need alcohol in any way. If you told me tomorrow that I could never drink it again, my life would not change in any significant way at all.
I haven't used any other intoxicants in almost 40 years, and don't plan to restart.
I'm honestly kind of surprised that this is a story at all.
Every doctor I've ever talked to has said that any health benefits of alcohol are far outweighed by the negative impacts. That really isn't up for debate, is it? So we know that it is toxic, really at any dose, the question is how much of a dose can we take before we have issues - either acute or chronic? That is extremely variable depending on genetics, size, muscle mass, medications, other physical and mental issues, not to mention environmental factors and "other stuff".
So the recommendation for 2 drinks a week or less seems extremely sensible to me. And while I'm not drinking right now - I may give it up entirely because of the health impacts, both acute and chronic - when/if I do start drinking again, I highly doubt I'll keep it to less than 2 a week. I'll probably have about 2 beers a night, 3-5 nights a week. And they'll probably be the sensible size (16 oz). But that doesn't mean that I disagree with the recommendation that they've given.
Also, statistically speaking, the average person has less than 1 ball and less than 1 ovary. This is assuming that there are far more men with only 1 ball or 0 balls than there are with polyorchidism, and the same with women, and also that there are an equal amount of men and women.
When I met my (now) Wife, I didn't drink. At all. Her German background meant that beer was a normal, everyday, part of life. I'm super high strung, and did, however, enjoy the calming properties of the demon weed, it's how we met. I started drinking a little and it stayed that way for a long time. I had a policy of not drinking on work nights, ever, and gave up on the weed in the 90's when I wasn't enjoying it any more. . When I started working 12hr shifts and had half the time off I started drinking more and eventually a lot. It was astounding how much the two of us would drink as we would routinely go through 50L kegs in a couple weeks or less, with lot's of shots of vodka, or Euro schnapps at the same time. I'm not sure at what point it slowed down, or why, but we only drink a couple beers on my off nights now. While my SIL was dying of lung cancer I found some edibles for her. She was hardcore chronic, which is, I'm sure, what contributed to her death. I tried the edibles and quite enjoyed them. So probably 30 or more years after quitting that, I'm dabbling again. And sleeping really well.
I don't need any of it, and have/had no problems not doing it in the past. But like a good bacon sandwich, I know it's not ideal for me, but I do enjoy it.

Yes, people have said the same thing about my cars and bikes.
MiniDave said:Many of the posters in this thread seem to HAVE to have an alcoholic drink every day.....the why is what interests me.
Because that is literally part of my job. Sensory analysis is a real thing that is a part of quality control. Not every day, but many days.
I'm pretty sure only two of us have said we "HAVE" to drink, and we're both brewers.
Recreationally, I drink almost every night. I don't *have* to, but I enjoy it. I drink really good, fancy stuff that I take my time to savor.
We have so much more to worry about than drinking at this point. Those for whom it causes pain to others excepted, let us not forget all the jolly people who have jolly times with the help of a little nip and tuck. I'd rather spend a lot more of these researchers time with how to solve hunger and war than those among us who like to have a couple drinks more than that will save the last few days of our old ass lives.
tl:dr: don't drink if it makes you an shiny happy person. Please. Otherwise, let's have fun and enjoy a light poisoning to release some fun into this place that's looking increasingly dreary.
