Can you get on w/ a private contractor as a helper? Money might not be that great in some places but you'd also be getting paid to learn a trade.
There's a trade school in town that teaches welding. I know I run into the same issues with heat there, but at least it's something I enjoy doing. That's something I'm going to be looking into.
On another note, I might have a roommate now, so I'll have income from that to cover pretty much all of the utilities on the house. There's no mortgage nor rent payment, so living here is pretty cheap.
