A buddy of mine in HS and I were out a night - we both had motorcycles. His was much faster than mine. We were heading down a road that was well known for a couple of good "fishing holes". He jumps on the gas and flies by me. I ignore him and do the 50 km/h posted limit and all of a sudden I see his brake light come on. I continue along trying to pretend I don't even know the guy. The Police Officer waves me over and I am thinking WTF?
I flip open the shield on my helmet and say, "Yes Officer?"
He puts his hand on my shoulder and says, "You're both lucky that you didn't follow him!"
I pulled up on the right and waited while my buddy got written up for 80 in a 50. Had I jumped on the gas it would have been both of us for Racing.
I had a couple people crash trying to keep up with me back when I was really into canyon running. Always felt bad about it even though there wasn't really much I could do about it. Even if I tried to tell people to go their own pace and not try to follow me, that would just make them want to keep up even more. Still feel bad about a lot of them, actually.

Same here. There's a ramp from I-95 on the Rt 1 N in PA near Oxford Valley that is a R-L-R series. As I've been driving that road for 20+ years, I can usualyl take it at hwy speed hardly slowing down - regardless of what I'm driving. I did it once in my g/f's Passat VR6 years ago with a BMW 5-series on my butt. I was rather stunned how much he slowed down since I know an E39 is more capable than that.
I've probably surprised more than a few people when driving my Cummins, although since I run expensive snow tires all year, I try to keep agressive cornering in that truck to a minimum.
When I worked at the Jeep place, on Saturdays I would generally drive the Jensen. There was a body shop just down the road and one of the guys there had a Mustang GT, about a 2001? 2002? anyway, he was determined to race me. There was no way 144 HP would ever catch that Mustang in a straight line, plus I am supposed to be an adult. After 4 or 5 times of me not rising to the bait, I guess he figured I was a wuss.
The access road behind the dealerships went about 1/8 mile straight, then there was a 100 deg left, a short straight, a 100 deg right, another short straight, then a 90 deg right, another short straight, then a 90 deg left which dumped into a parking lot. In the Jensen it was a LOT of fun, even though it body rolls like the Poseidon it sticks good.
This particular Saturday afternoon I was heading out to go home, here comes Mustang Boy past the parking lot and of course he floors it. So I decide it's time to be less than adult and popped out behind him and got right on his rear bumper. He comes to the first left and realizes I am not braking, he came through it loose to say the least. I stuck to his tail like glue and he realized that all that straight line HP wasn't going to shake me. So he tried to out handle me. I nearly passed him in the second turn but he was driving erratically to say the least so I let him go ahead into the next to last 90 where he tromped the gas to try to shake me and promptly spun out completely leaving a huge cloud of tire smoke, a stalled engine and an embarrased look on his face. Of course I am laughing like a loon at this.
He never tried that again.
I never drive in anything but a lawful manner on the street. I never even purposefully break the speed limit, even by one MPH.
I like to keep up with cars that are determined to show off that they are faster than me. In a reasonable fashion of course.
They always go so slow in the turns.

That is just the sound of your Tell-Tale Heart beating.

great post

I usually annoy people by driving slowly (i.e. very near/at the speed limit.) Of course, I usually do that through the twisty bits, too, instead of backing off. Then they get annoyed that I didn't slow down, too.
imagine what it's like to turn on the double bubbles and watch the car you are stopping, stand on the gas and wreck at the next bend. So many times, such idiots.

I would seem really unprofessional, because I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face.
I absolutely love passing the ricers on the outside of a corner...
In my '96 Chevy C1500 Extended Cab.

Yeah, a lot of young doofuses in Beemers, or civics, or some other "fast" car are usually quite displeased with the way the proper application of "smooth is fast", and some patient driving will allow me to hustle an overweight autotragic sedan through a cloverleaf with double merges much faster than their fast-in-a-straight-line car is capable of.
...Its their grimaces of displeasure that make me chuckle the most

I will admit this was not the first time I have gone quickly into that corner. My favourite was an E46M3 that I went around in that same corner (it goes from 2 lanes to 1 at the end where it merges onto the AC Expressway) and to prove that his car was better.. he floored it once the road straightened out and left my 140hp ti for dead

I must be sick. My general thought with that second video was, "Dang those guys sure are slow. They would suck at an auto-x."

Your no fun

A couple of years ago I did basically the same thing. Kid on my bumper, 50 mph, turned in for the on ramp and rolled into the throttle. Took that ramp a few weeks later and there was a shiny new section of guard rail.
One of the guys at work had a BMW that he wouldn't hesitate to tell you how fast the car was and good he could drive it. After work one day I followed him onto a big sweeping ramp on to a highway. He was 4-5 car lengths ahead at turn in and I was pushing him just a little at the bottom. BTW I was driving my 5 ton ambulance at the time. I've never had to hear about how fast he is ever since. And yes, I can be a shiny happy person on occation

Problem is, you know they're never thinking, "..man, I gotta work on my driving." It's always, "THIS CAR IS A PIECE OF E36 M3!!"

This I'm guilty of. Drive the same speed on straights, twisties and corners. Have had a couple big SUV's tailgating on the straights end up off road in a corner when I didn't slow down and they thought they didn't have to either and didn't make it through the corner. When you drive a bright red sporty looking car (RX8) you tend not to bring attention to yourself by driving too fast.
I probably already told this story once, but here's one from the opposite side..
I once had someone in a 1st Gen CRX right on me (I was in the Golf, it was new then & I still had my SCCA license), so I picked a nice tight little ramp to cruise through at 8/10ths. Hey, works all the time, right?
Look at the mirror afterwards, guy's still there. He waves, I point to a parking lot, we pull over. "So, what class do you race?", he says. He was a Formula Ford guy who saw my SCCA sticker on the back.
i once out cornered a C5 Vette with my 71 Nova.. he was riding my ass around some sweeping 45mph corners that i was taking at 60, but he fell back when i took a 25mph corner at 60...
that car was fun for what it was..

I'm not even going to attempt to claim that I follow speed limits all the time, although I do almost always follow them on surface streets. On the freeway, I'm usually ten over, but so are 90% of the other cars here in CA, and by no means am I one of the faster cars on the freeway at any given time.
The only public roads on which I really drive much faster than the limit are twisty mountain roads in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night, where I'm familiar with the layout and check to see if there's any rocks in the road or any potential traffic first, and even on those I stick to speeds that are reasonably safe and prudent, even if they're twice what the limit signs say.
