I see a lot of jealousy here. What you're looking at is individuals providing a small bit of entertainment to a lot of people. They don't make much off each one, but multiply not much by a lot and you end up with a big number. A lot of people are trying, many don't do well. But there are always the outliers.
It's no different than a movie star being paid to strut around in front of the camera or Microsoft making billions of selling software. The difference is in scale.

You are totally in my head. It would work but you would have to actually call it placebo to be able to use the thousands of studies showing how effective it is for treating EVERYTHING!

Well you can't get venture capital outside of SF, duh!

A movie star, sure. This is somewhat like Honey Boo Boo or the Kardashians, but at least they have to travel and be in front of a camera and do promotional stuff. There's a little work involved.
Like Microsoft, absolutely not. They may not be a nice company or make the best products, but everything they make is orders of magnitude better and more useful than Yo or Flappy Bird. Even MS Sharepoint. That's like comparing a silly novelty hat to a military helmet with nightvision.

"Placebix takes advantage of the scientifically proven Placebo Effect to stimulate the natural self-healing ability of your body and mind."

There's being useful, and there's being entertaining. They may not be close to the same thing, but they are both just as valid.
So as a developer- you can make a $0.99 app that appeals to 100M people for 3 days or a $50 app that 10,000 really need, and it may be the best app of all time. Which is better?
