St George is an awesome place to ride bikes! I lived in Cedar City for 5 years a have done a ton of mountain biking in the St George area.
Check out the Bearclaw Poppy trail. The lower section is very beginner friendly and a ton of fun! You can start at the bottom, climb until you get to clavicle hill (you'll know it when you see it) and turn around for a fun rollercoaster ride back to the trailhead. Totally suitable for a hardtail too, I've even ridden it on my cyclocross bike.

That trail is less than 1/4 mile from my house. I've been out that way many times on dirtbikes and such (not on the trail but out in that part of BLM). Literally 5 houses from the end of the pavement. Pavement is much more my style though. If i keep up with it I'd love to try riding solo out to Zion Canyon and back this fall after it cools off a bit and I'm in a bit better shape.

BE VISIBLE, but pretend you aren’t.. I spent two nights in a hospital last year trying to remember what happened after being hit by a car one morning. I was lit up and had a reflective gillet on.
And this is why I won't even consider biking to work. All the danger of a motorcycle without the ability to keep up with traffic.
Crash statistics say that you are about equally likely to be involved in or die from a crash for every hour you ride a bike or drive a car. Now, the commute is usually longer when you ride, so since you spend more time you are slightly higher risk on a bike.
BUT! When riding the bike you are working out and statistically extending your life, which much more than makes up for the added risk of crashes.
I frequently hear people say "I couldn't ride a bike to work, almost everyone I know who does that has been in a crash before." But I rarely hear people say "commuting in a car scares me because almost everyone I know who does that has been in a crash before". Both statements however are probably equally true...
What did you end up with? The CL link is dead.
With bikes too, the 80's and 90's stuff calls me. You can score some sweet that-era road bikes for next to nothing. Models that were $500 back then you can sometimes find for $50. Or sometimes in the dumpster..
Years ago I used to bike to work regularly. My knees can't handle it anymore but I would love to do it again. I've even planned a route. I figured it would take me about twenty-thirty minutes by bike. It takes me 15 minutes by motorcycle or car.
I think I may be able to do it with electric assist. The thought is still rattling around in the back of my mind.
