Sunday I get stopped on US-17 northbound passing through a rural residential area. Unmarked Charger whips around, and I pull over promptly when I see the blue lights.

He goes through the usual drill asking me how fast I was going. I honestly guess 60, and tell him I was paying more attention to my engine temps as they had been rising rapidly and I didn't want to attend to it in someone's front yard.

He goes back, does his checks, comes back and informs me it's 55mph on the main highway and 70mph on the bypasses and hands me my warning.

Thank you for having a heart and realizing a guy 300 miles from home in an overheating 80's German car passing through rural NC on a Sunday afternoon had bigger things to worry about than another speeding ticket.

I'm pretty sure N/S C cops love revenue collection. Speed limits don't actually matter.

I don't really go more then 2-3 over (or at least I try) unless I'm with a pack of traffic.

Good thing you got a warning, sucks he felt the need to harass you though. I'm guessing the car made it home ok?

He saw a lone car going a bit too fast, I don't blame him for popping me. It actually gave me a chance to cool down while he ran my info.

Lord knows had this happened in VA or MD results would have been decidedly different.

Car went through an emergency roadside thermostat-ectomy about 30 miles later. It ran way under temp, but she got me home.

Yeah NC cops are a little crazy at times, A buddy of mine got pulled over here in Newport the other day and grilled by two deputies as to why his late 50's Austin Healey didn't have seatbelts...

They just wanted to get a better look and possibly take it for a drive.

is that even legal?

My fiat only has lapbelts.. I remember getting pulled over at a stop check point and they were all set to write me up for not wearing when I pointed out to them that I had been wearing my belt and I was STILL wearing my belt.

The car will be getting three point when she goes back on the road

Not at all, the law here is 1967 and earlier do not need them iirc, luckily my buddy had his iphone and a quick trip to the regulations online kept him from any more hassle... wow we got away from the original topic huh?

Way to make the people who pump 10s of thousands of dollars into the local economy welcome and encourage them to come back next year...

No, more of a way to be sure they get every last dollar out of the visitors.

NC has been a hit or miss state for me. Ive been let off for street-racing (In my teens), doing doughnuts, and sliding an F-body around, but I got a 4 point C&R for barking a tire in a V6 Explorer when I didn't even mean to. I guess all cops are different...

It depends on how bored the cop is, if its the beginning or the end of his shift, if he's eating dinner, if its raining out. Like today, it's been raining like mad out, 2inches an hour or so. I saw 3 state troopers on 95, everyone including myself was going 15 over the speed limit, nobody got pulled over. I don't blame them, I wouldn't want to get out of the car in this kind of weather either.

A wet trooper is a stupid trooper.

On a semi-related on the same trip heading towards NC, passing through Norfolk, VA on 64 the electronic advisory board read:

"Berkley Bridge Closed for Construction"

I couldn't stop laughing. This forum has warped my reality even more than it already was.

Yeah, wish the one in Kentucky would have given me a break last summer. He even acknowledged that the truck behind me (that also got a ticket) was tailgating and trying to get me to go faster. I did slightly speed up to get where I could move out of the way then slowed back down. Big 4X4 tailgating a Miata = very discerning.

Good. I'm guessing some choice words were thrown around. Nothing like biting the hand that feeds.

We drove down to Charlotte and back last week. I saw way too many county sheriffs' cars sitting out on the interstate.I don't think I even saw an NC State Trooper the whole 3 days we were in the state. That always smells of a simple revenue grab by county mounties to me.

I travel between Asheville and Charlotte (Asheville and Danville, and Asheville and Knoxville) quite often and I do occasionally see a Sheriff's deputy's car .... almost never do they have radar on... ( one time last yr is the only time I can remember)... in these hard economic times (or for what ever other reason) I do hear many SHP radars on my trips... can't remember the last time I saw a deputies car with what appeared to be a traffic stop...

I've had more positive experiences with LEOs, than negative ones.

There are some control freaks, but the majority of officers are genuinely good people. Seems like departments are bigger issues than individuals.
