16 hours? Flights even to the mainland (Brussels, Berlin, Paris) only take 6-7 hours. I often fly through Keflavik and that's 5 hours.
And if it's lunacy, call me a loon. I've done it 4 times now. I popped over to Saltzburg to see a friend for a weekend once. Seriously, it's the same distance for me to fly to Los Angeles, but if I said I'm going to Los Angeles for a day no one would bat an eye
I flew from Toronto to Glasgow, and that was a solid 8 hours, so thats where my math comes from. Twice 8 is 16.
And no, I'd call you a lunatic for flying across the continent and back in three days as well. Aircraft are a terrible place to be.

Oh, I thought you meant 16 hours each way.
I really don't mind flying. I'm not a germaphobe and my personal space starts at my prostate. I think it's fun. I usually fly out of BWI, Dulles, or JFK. I once flew cross country (CA-PA-CA) twice in one day just to look at a house. Having a friend who is a retired Delta employee and can get you free standby seats is pretty cool.
Several years ago, bride and I were in London. Friend of ours had gotten to know a London cabbie (who owned his cab - not usual) and gave us his name. Hired him for the day, told him we were interested in history, and to show us what he would want to see in our shoes. Being shown around by someone with The Knowledge is an outstanding experience.
Great day and well worth the cost - seem to remember about $200 US
My parents went to England when my mom was 5-6 months pregnant with me. Half work trip for dad, half vacation. Dad took mom to a bunch of industrial parks looking for random parts for his Austin Healey that he was having a hard time sourcing in the pre-internet days USA.
They also got a really knowledgeable cabbie early in the trip. Dad handed him about a days worth of earnings that first day, and he stayed with them the entire trip. They said they wouldn’t have done that if mom wasn’t pregnant, but it was worth every penny.
Id want to get to rural Yorkshire or Scotland myself, just based on tv shows and movies.
