Has this been done? Can it be done? I figure if there's enough room for a cross-flow head, there's gotsta be enough room for an LS??

No love for an LS powered Amazon?? I'm amazed. What a good looking car, now put some power and a bucket full of torques and giddyup!!
It would be super awesome. I laughed out loud at your hotlink maths, and, as usual, my work-mates think I'm insane. I think you should do it with a custom tube chassis and use a Corvette transaxle. See how short you can make the driveshaft/torquetube. There's the plan.
On 2! On 2!
Ready?!
BREAK!!

It's the LS part. They're so played out now that I overheard at a car show a kid at a 98-02 Trans Am comment "Geeze, another LS1 swap?!?".

It's just that dropping a V8 into a 122 (or the structurally similar 1800) isn't a simple matter. The engine bay and specifically the front suspension was designed for a straight-up inline 4 and is surprisingly tight. With a V-# engine, the exhaust ports exit into the upper a-arm mounts - less of an issue with a cross-flow head (although no 122/1800 ever came with cross-flow heads). There is a guy in SoCal selling a replacement subframe/suspension assembly that will make the swap easier, but they aren't cheap.
Having a crusty 1800ES sitting in my back yard, this is a subject I've thought a lot about...

The 98-02 Trans Am came with an LS1 stock, that's why the comment was funny, ironic, and sad all at the same time. In theory I love the LS, and would really like to own a swapped FD RX-7 and a swapped 944, but in reality I'm so sick of them I wouldn't open the hoods of my hypothetical cars.

And we are back to the custom chassis I mentioned earlier. Even MOAR win!

Except these Volvos are unibody cars, so while building a custom chassis is obviously possible, it would be a HUGE undertaking to work right. It's easy to stare at an interent picture and day-dream. It's quite another when you're laying underneath a real car and trying to figure out where to put the chassis members so the floor doesn't end up where the stock seat bottoms are...
I'm not kidding when I say I've wasted a ton of time coming up with ways to make this idea work. One idea that sticks in my head is to cut out the entire floorpan of the car and graft it onto the floor-pan of a Miata (the wheel bases are pretty close). This would solve a whole host of problems fairly cheaply, if not easily. LS swaps into Miatas are well documented.
"Uhh...well, so what do you wanna do?"
"I wanna take you out to dinner, and then I wanna go back to my apartment and check out my LS1 Volvo Amazon."
"I love LS1 Volvo's."
I love the Office Space hotlinks!!
And Ian F. That's exactly why I posted this here. I figures someone here must have put some time and effort into thunkin' this up. What a beautiful car, I wanna build one sometime. Either the 122 or the 1800.

No worries. We seem to have a thread about stuffing a V8 into an older Volvo every year or so. A 240 is a better swap candidate as the strut front suspension allows a much roomier engine bay. SBF's fit like the cars were made for them.
A relatively local guy is building a Lexus V8 powered one here:

Well, that's awesome.
Although it's really an SC400 with a Volvo body on top .. but it's still awesome.
