Sister in law in Jacksonville just showed her street full of water and flowing like a river. Almost over the curb.

What part of Jacksonville?  Let me know if she needs anything.

Jax Beach. I think they're good. House sits a couple feet higher than street level.

Thank you.

I'm a bit behind on my reading.  I was reading Tim's opening essay from Jan/17 last night.  Hurricane, cabin inland, trees down, Tom helping, chainsaws...  Is the Jan/18 essay going to about the same?  Hey, copy/paste...  Done.

Hope you guys are doing OK.

High tide is another couple of hours but the rain has stopped so hopefully they see the water start to go down. Right now the bridges there are only open for people leaving.

Edit - if it helps, lots of the east part of Jax Beach flood a couple of feet on the high lunar tides.

Charleston seems to be under water. I know this restaurant was built above a detention pond, but this photo is pretty amazing.

The report I got from my friend who lives on the Sarasota / Manatee county line.

When it became clear around 7 p.m. yesterday that the path of Irma had turned north, which would take it over land, rather than water, I knew that I would be home free and indeed that is what happened.  Powerful rain bands came through this area yesterday from mid-morning to late afternoon.  I estimate that we received 8-10 inches,  but the wind was only 30-50 knots so the damage was only moderate....I lost a few tree limbs.   By evening, the wind was down to 25-30 knots and the rain had practically stopped. The eye passed directly over Sarasota at 2 a.m. this morning. I did not lose power, although 50% of homes in Manatee County did.  Today is clean up day. We are advised to stay off the roads while debris and electric wires are cleared.

Most of the coast and downtown was under water. Tide is headed out now so it's not the issue it was. The beaches got pummeled again. We have a very few trees down. I actually went in to work this morning, but since everyone else is closed we knocked off about 11am. We still have some pretty good gusts blowing, but I think the worst of it is passed.

Florida definitely got the worst of this one.

Now if the next one will just move on off to sea, all will be well.

I have a friend who evacuated from Atlantic Beach, near Jacksonville to Valdosta Ga.    Turns out that was not a good choice.   I haven't heard from her to see how she made out.

Has anybody heard how Tampa fared? I have an ex-coworker/friend who lives in NW Tampa along an intercoastal waterway who decided to stay.

Also, my ex-gf lives in Bradenton who also decided to stay. I lost her contact info awhile back.

I'm glad you GRMers in the path made it through OK!

Early reports are Tampa wasn't as bad as they expected. That still means it was bad just that it could have been much worse considering.

The eye shifted and headed towards us in Polk County.  My town is 145 feet above sea level, though, so flooding was not much of an issue here.  The winds were intense, lots of trees down.  Power restored within 18 hours!!!  I'm thrilled; it took three weeks after Hurricane Charlie.

As you guys know, water, not wind*, is the biggest destroyer with hurricanes.  My dad's church had major roof damage and rain intrusion.  The carpets and bench cushions are probably a total loss.  My house, OTOH, fared pretty well.  No broken windows, some large branches on the roof from a very tall tree, but they didn't break through the roof, and shingles looked OK when I climbed up there today.  I cut away what I could, but the branches are heavy and they only broke part way through.  The breaks in the tree are WAY up high, so I'm going to have to pay a tree service to get them down.  Happy it wasn't worse

Other than the Keys, this storm seems to be more about the heavy rainfall.   It doesn't appear to have been nearly as bad to structures as Andrew was.  We got rain yesterday and lost power about 8:45.   No idea why, but it came back on at 7:20 this morning.

When I would go to Charleston on business years ago, I would always stay in the Hampton Inn right behind the California Dreaming.

You're in Polk? I live towards 4 corners. The eye went over my apt at about 1am. That was strange. Wild, then quiet,  then wild.

Andrew caused lots of changes to building codes in the area. Andrew seems like a stronger storm but the structures are less vulnerable now than they were 25 years ago.

I am impressed that the remnants of Irma now cover about half the US, and there's still a discernable rotation. Not that it's packing any punch at this point, but damn. That was a bigass storm.

We did our assessment today while at the same time hit already scheduled trouble calls and fit in down lines you know while you're already out there.  Not a fun day but overall I've seen worse damage here.  I work in a lower income area and the contrast in ability to deal with an event like this was big. I couldn't depend on the sounds of generators to know that power was out. Instead I'd pull into a neighborhood to dead silence and see everyone outside on their porches. Just from over hearing conversations their ability to prepare was hampered by a lack of transportation and they face the same challenge now afterwards. A lot of them had food saved up but it was all perishable. Did see a few cookouts where they were going through the freezer before it went bad. I know our electric company had ~270,000 customers out when they started their recovery efforts and had half those back on within a day.  Overall though everything is slowly getting back to normal. Good thing is neighbors are checking on each other and helping out.

Still without power. Got 9 hours and 45 minutes out of the generator last night powering two small AC units and our fridge. My parents are also without power so they're bunking in our guest room. Hope I can find gas tomorrow as I'm down to my last 5 gallons.

Tod, of Challenge bothers Ted and Tod, had a portion of his roof covering ripped out from the storm. He is in Orlando. Rain got in and ruined his bedroom and part of his kitchen.
