All the chatter on here about the Parts Express C-note speaker kit made me think I might be missing out on something. Couldn't let that happen. Ordered just before Christmas. Finished them up last night. Really haven't had a chance to properly listen to them, but I'm a little underwhelmed at this point. They just don't sound as lively as the Overnight Sensations, which I put together a few years ago. I'm hoping I think more highly of them once I have them set up.
This was my first foray into the world of wood veneer, since I didn't want to be tasked with getting them to look good with multiple coats of paint. It presented a few challenges, which I met with acceptable--though far from perfect--results.
They look great - too bad it appears they don't sound as good as they look

It's not that they sound bad, I guess I was just expecting something more noteworthy. I am currently driving them with a wicked cheap amp, so maybe that's my next purchase.
Have you checked the obvious like making sure they are in phase?
I know I know but I have done dumber things when building stuff.
sieve, sieve, sieve... whoops, saw the title, and thought I was at a hockey game.
Hey, do drivers have a break-in period? I swear these are sounding better today.

Yes. I think their kits even mention so in the instructions.
Yes, they absolutely do. Many speakers recommend volume levels and time for break-in. IIRC the last set I bought new recommended something like 80 dB for 40 hours or some number to loosen up the spiders and surrounds.
I bought a pair for a friend based on the general GRM praise for them. I'm not blown away by them, but for the small number of bucks they cost they do sound damn good. He added a powered 12" sub from parts express (also cheap) which makes up for the lack of low bass. They did seem to sound a little better after some use. I think the woofer surrounds loosen up with use.
The veneer looks great.
