I ended up buying the AMS not because I'm super keen on fast switching speed, but rather it being automated.

Yeah, my comment regarding switching speed was more if you want to switch multiple times during a print.  Lets say you want to build a part with a large overhang thats 30deg from horizontal, and use PETG as support for PLA.  If that overhang is 1" in Z, at 0.2mm layer height.  Thats 127 layers.  At a 90 second average swap time thats... 190 mins added to the build.

Also, I have to say the AMS is definitely the most janky part of the setup and most likely to cause a stopped build or build failure.

Yes, this part is true, and he has had some great contributions to the FDM world.  For example, Bambu Slicer and Orca Slicer are both based on Prusa Slicer.

That was supposed to say he basically invented 3D printing. I know it was around before him, just like the automobile was around before Hank Ford. Ford brought the automobile to the masses, Prusa brought 3D Printing to the masses.

What kind of props do you usually make or are thinking of 3D printing?

Even if you're not familiar with 3D modeling software, there are sites with models for download, some of them for free.

Pretty much anything.  Last season we did a play in which the script calls for a large hookah-type bong, and the only ones I could find were about $200.  Instead, I could have printed it in 3 or 4 stages for pennies by comparison.  The lightning bolt we got came in three pieces with a pin in each end that fit in a hole and we glued it.

We did a show that needed a candlestick telephone.  I ended up building it with some dowels on a lathe and a couple take-out sauce containers, but it would have been nice to just hit a button and print one.  Need some fake food that won't rot?  Print it.  The big "key to the city" from Big Fish?  Print that in 5 or 6 sections.  This show needed a bunch of rocks to make a campfire pit.  Two people spent the better part of a day cutting foam and coating it.  Looks great, but I also could have hit a button and did something else while it printed.

This show also has a bunch of pocket knives, which we had to purchase and dull (a rather time-intensive process that must be done correctly) when they could have been printed in an already safe format.  We needed a Luger handgun for 39 Steps which I had to dig deep to find on the internet, but it could have easily been printed.

There is also a huge chunk of business to be had with props rentals.  Some of these might pay dividends in the long run.

Just some random examples. We have 100 years of props, so we often have what we need in stock, but I don't stock 3' tall bongs

The rub with theater is that if it's modern and you need it, it's easy to find on Amazon.  But if you need a period-correct Silent Butler, they haven't been in vogue for 200 years and they get hard to find.

I like what you are thinking , but this works if you can get the print file from thingaverse etc ,

But  having to learn a program to make the print file  might take more time than building it in wood etc

But I am sure there are a few people here that could make you simple print files  in less than an hour ,

Good Luck

It's a shame you're on the other side of the country from me. I have a decent amount of manufacturing tools (including a 3D printer) here, I love to share and help out, and I'm extremely familiar with theatrical environments.

Damn.

Bummer.  We could kick back with a couple sodas and share stories while things printed.
