She asked me at dinner tonight if there is any way to get toys to kids that lost everything in texas, and may lose it all in florida. When probed, her reason was that everyone is sending food and water, but nobody says anything about toys for kids to play with.

I had never thought about it.

Is there someone doing this already? Anybody know somebody with kids with no toys? She really wants to help. Offered her piggy bank and pile of dollars that she has been saving up to go to American girl. I told her id look into it. Ain't got a clue where to start, but the hive knows all.

There are organizations that do just that, but I can't think of a name off the top of my head. Could be worth calling the local children's hospital or shriners center to find out for sure.

She could probably easily start a toy drive at school to send down care packages though. Not only would that be great of her to do just as a personal thing, it would really stand out later in life like with college admissions.

I'd be in for a few boxes of toddler toys, I need room to walk in my house again and those kids could use it more than mine.

Child's Play started by Penny Arcade does this mainly for hospitals... dunno if they've branched out to disaster relief yet

Whatever you do, do not send actual toys.  Most organizations cannot handle the influx of stuff after a storm, and it all ends up sitting and getting ruined. After Sandy hook, they were sent something like 14k teddy bear.  Kids only need so many.

You have a really awesome kid. I can send $20 or plenty of toys. Which is preferred?

Bren a busy day.

Reading y'alls responses must have given me an allergic reaction or something.  Eues started watering.

I don't know what to say, except that you are all awsome human beings and examples of what is so right in America.

Before I'm willing to accept donations, i need to find out how to get them to the kids that need them. Once that step is done, game on.

School wasn't much help. They are already filling a 28 foot box truck with food/clothes/water to send down to texas, and didn't have any room for toys. If that changes, they are supposed to let me know. I never received a response to the e-mail i sent last night, so that may be a dead end.

Texas guys: any ideas in your neck of the woods?

Florida guys: same question.

Would love a name and phone number.

Hmm, maybe I could get some stuff over to you.

Related:  I *hate* that toys for tots and other toy donation programs only take new toys.

My kids and I would be happy to contribute some gently used toys and some additional cash besides.  Is the address for shipping the same as for making a drop-off?  We'll be in the Greensboro area for my dad's birthday next weekend, so I'd be looking to make the dropoff sometime over next weekend.

Don't change plans on my account, especially those that involve an anniversary. We all know happy wife = happy life lol. I can drop off with your brother, or just leave the box on your doorstep if you trust your neighbors.

I really dont havr neighbors.  Back porch be fine, or my brother.  Either way.

And if i cancelled anniversary plans, i would be cancelling all further anniversaries. That aint happening...

Whole bunch of us here in California sent stuff out. Toys were definitely on the list but so were pacifiers and diaper.

Diapers were bolded and underlined and then circled three times. We sent diapers.

^We did diapers for Harvey, will do again for Irma.  I cannot imagine being a family with little one(s) stuck recovering from a storm without diapers.
