Those previously unconfirmed rumors of Jay Leno making an appearance on Top Gear? Consider them now confirmed, courtesy of The Man himself. According to Jay Leno's Garage, the popular American late-night comedian, talk show host and all around cool guy did in fact visit Jeremy Clarkson, The Stig and the rest of the crew to film a piece for the show's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment.
From the sound of things, Leno had lots of fun in the U.K. and he specifically calls Top Gear his favorite show on television. With due respect to Conan, we'd have to agree. In addition to filming a few teaser shots of his trips around the TG Test Track, the comedian takes us into the Top Gear Production Office – and let's just say its pretty much exactly as you'd expect from a bunch of car-obsessed men. Click past the break to watch the video.

At the very least, having Leno bankroll the US version might be the only way to retain its snarkiness and honest reviews without having to kowtow to sponsors.

Yeah without private funding the show here would suck big time, hell even with private funding the lawyers might have a fit anyway. I see Leno, Corolla and the third I can't figure out in my mind yet.
Top Gear is unique. Ask any Australian gearhead how badly they screwed the pooch making that "local" version of it. I'm really stoked to hear Leno's going to be on the show, but I'm glad the US version fell through. I'll bet Leno ends up being one of the few Americans that Clarkson can tolerate...

He seemed to be cool with Marky Mark.
I can't wait to hear them talk about his car history. Leno pretty much trumps the crap out of every previous guest, including Jaykay.
This is going to be awesome. He'll probably rock the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" track time, he's a pretty damned good driver.

I think Tim Allen would be the best bet here.
I think the Jay Leno/Tim Allen/Adam Carolla combo would make Top Gear:USA a rediculously popular show... :)

Jay's a car guy, but that's not a gig he's interested in. He knows that the network and the sponsors would destroy it.

Jay Leno said:
So someone calls me from the network and is clearly not a car person. He says: “You like cars, right?” I say yes. “Like, all kinds of cars?” Well, yes. I like all kinds of cars. Why? “Well, the network has bought the TV show . . . um . . . High Gear? Top Gear? Top Gear! Top Gear, yes. We know you like to build cars.”
I ask: what’s the plan for the show? “Well, like, one week you build a car that flies and the next week you make a car that goes under water.” So I said: you know you can’t build these things in a week.
In my mind I can just see Jeremy lambasting Americans for what they did to his show. So I think: I’ve got to run away from this as quickly as I can. So I tell him that, as much as I like the show, I try not to make my hobby my job.
I like the show just the way it is. Jeremy and the guys are extremely talented, so maybe it would be an idea to do an American show similar to Top Gear but not with the same name, because I think it would be impossible to recreate or live up to the standards of the British show.
[....]
But with Top Gear I have such respect for the original show, I feel if they asked me to do it I would be a pale imitation of Jeremy.
It would have to be something completely different, coming from a different angle. But when you see something that’s sort of perfect as it is, it’s difficult. Are you outright stealing, trying to imitate? What are you doing? I would prefer to do a different show rather than try to copy something that works so well already.
I love top gear, but I understand that lots of what they say is sensationalist stuff that's done just for effect. Where else would a man who looks like this complain about fat Americans:

Well, I don't know when Leno will be on, but he wasn't on last night's episode.

The comedian Chistopher Titus could be a host, too. He did a decent job hosting a episode of Rides when they did a big tour across the US.
