I just picked up a oil pump, pump chain, oil pan gasket and oil for the '92 300D. How does $500 sound!?!?!?

Makes me feel like an idiot for not spending $30 bucks to replace the oil pump on my 84 blazer when I had the pan off...
At least it isn't the $200/side for Dorman replacement Fox Mustang "headers" from the cheapo parts store.....
How much was the oil? I just found the other stuff for $281 plus whatever shipping would be with a quick google search.

The oil was from Autozone. There are only two oil pumps available in the aftermarket. The $260(ish) one is not for my engine and when I called on the other one they couln't tell me for sure if it was right or not. They said "well, just compare when you get the old one out. If it's wrong, send it back." Uh HELLO! At that point my engine is hanging from chain and I can't go without a car.
Trust me, I searched for a month before buying these parts.
Did you at least get a kiss? Any time you walk in the huge modern glass building past all those ficus trees and the huge salt water aquarium, smell that fancy coffee and see everyone banging away on the free WiFi well none of that stuff is free.
Pelican Parts can generally tell you from the engine number if something will fit or not.

No kiss but there was a busty sales-woman there.....

I don't give a damn what she looks like when my wallet is involved.

FIXED IT
500$ is still cheaper than either a used engine or a rebuild. Why did you need to replace the oil pump, was it worn out of spec? You could always try to find a used pump but that may come with its own set of issues. There aren't a ton of the w124 diesels around so I'd expect parts to be a bit pricey, but again over the cost of the car 500$ isn't that bad.
Did they at least give you a safe word to use? Cause if not, that sounds like you need to call the cops and report a rape.... of your wallet.
When I rebuilt my 220D, the machine shop guy had a supplier that sold German made parts he said were identical to the MB parts, just in a different box and at half the price. I had him order all that stuff for me. I put 70K miles on that motor after the rebuild, which was barely broke in at that point, and the rest of the car basically fell apart around it.
Any time you need a part for a European car, just Google the part number and you'll usually find a cheaper alternative. It may even be the same manufacturer, just in a different box.
I'm not really complaining about the price of Benz parts. I expected internal engine components to not be terribly cheap. I've been pleasantly surprised by the few other things I've had to get for it. Bosch glow plugs for $20 each was nice.
Woody, I tried to get the part number, but the dealer won't give it out
I came up with a part number from a web site and had no luck, but I don't know if that part number was correct or not. I don't have it anymore so I can't double-check.
In the end, I'm not complaining since I don't have to pay for fuel (for the most part) so it's still paid for itself. I was shocked at the price of an oil pump though. I could have done a dry-sump for that much haha.
