My 16-year old son is currently driving on the freeway. My wife is in the passenger seat. I’m in the back typing this to keep my mind occupied.

Next I’m going to Amazon to look for underwear extraction tools.

My oldest is 15 with a permit.     Never really fully relax unless it's an empty freeway.  even then.

That's fun.

Probably need to be looking at 4 jaw pullers for that.

I mentally write off one car for every kid. So far only 50% of them have taken me up on that and only one more to go. Zero injuries, one car totaled, one merely damaged. All you can do is teach them the best that you can and let the card fall where they may.

Haha. You guys are funny.

We made it fine. He had a VERY tricky intersection to navigate and kept his cool. This graduated licensing is a much better idea than the crappy driver’s ed I had.

In reply to DrBoost :

I do the same with my 16 year old daughter- you said this is better but I know my dad never drove with his six kids.

Of course it was a short period until the first born wild child dented every fender on our 1973 Super Beetle.

Can’t be that bad, you’re posting from the back seat and not the hospital .

DrBoost,

I'm feeling your pain.  My twins are currently going through this process.  I think sitting in the back seat is worse than the passenger seat.  Not saying the passenger seat is great.... but the back is worse.

Good luck.  You'll get through it.

It is nerve wracking at first but will get better with time. Once the panic dies down it is soooooo nice to loose some of the taxi duty that we as parents have. Good luck staying calm and try not to dent the floor stomping on the imaginary brake pedal

Dr. Boost,. I know your in MI so there are a couple options for training I'm sure you are aware of.  M1 Concourse offers teen schools with skid cars and Street Survival visits Fowlerville Proving Grounds once or twice a year.  FYI

Make sure to noticeably grip the back of the seat at every opportunity.  It helps new drivers to relax.

I am reminded of 1982.  I had my driver's permit but you had to be with a licensed driver in the passenger seat.  I had my sister who was one year older and maybe had her license for about 6 months more than me .  Was that legal...we thought it was.  Boy, I wish I "knew" now as much as I thought I did back then.

We would have been in my Mom's '79 Bonneville, exact to this but with tan vinyl top.

My school offered a summer Driver's Ed Class.  I distinctly remember that the car we had was recently donated for the use of the class by the  local big Oldsmobile dealership.  It was the BRAND NEW, just released, cutting edge GM J-Car, specifically a Old Firenza 4 door.  That damn car wouldn't start most days.  It was even a very well equipped model complete with 2-tone paint and sport wheels.  Imagine this car in 2-tone tans.

Most all of our actual driving was done in the instructors 1975 Torino Wagon with a 351

I did the same thing( mentally write off one car per daughter).  The oldest I bought a new Saturn Ion. With a manual transmission. It’s the car she learned how to drive on. 18 years later with the original clutch still in it and around 250,000 miles on it she traded it in for a new Honda.

The second daughter totaled her new Toyota Yaris ( her choice of cars) in a little over a year. Then ruined the new replacement car by driving over a chunk of concrete on the freeway.

Since I didn’t buy her a third car she bought a Ford Focus that lasted another 2 years before it was repossessed for non payment.

You are right. Each kid is different.

Ugh.  I remembe when I was 17 and had a learner's permit and was getting my regulation hours of time with a licensed driver in the passenger seat, and my mom reached through my arms while I was navigating a parking lot to honk at someone.

Difficulty:   I think that was the first, and only, time I have ever witnessed her operating a horn.  Mostly she seems to follow the same theory that I do, that honking is automotive whining and not only do people not listen to whiners but they actively fight against whatever they are whining about.

I have e-mails back and forth. The kid has to hold a level 2 permit. As soon as he does, he’s signed up. My 14-year ild daughter starts driver’s ed in about 3 weeks

In the process of teaching my daughter the fine art myself, so I can relate to the anxiety!  Honestly, it is going better than I expected so far, five weeks in.

Good thing is a Street Survival class in Cincinnati area on June 1 just opened up for her ... can’t wait to get her thru that ...

The worst part is following too closely and slowing down when cars are braking ahead of you.

She doesn’t react when brake lights go on.    Brake!

We're halfway through, 18 and 17 year olds have their proper licenses, 16 yo is on her permit and the 14 yo will bat cleanup.

It impresses me the change from when I got my permit in the 80's.  Then you had to be permitted for 30 days (co-pilot required), then off to the races with a full license.

Now it's permit for 6 months with a requirement of 30 hours of driving with something like 6 hours at night.  Then you have an intermediate license for 6 months (restrictions on when you can drive and how many non-family members you can have in the car) before graduating to a FULL license.
