Sorry to resurrect an old thread but a guy at work asked me about this, and asked how I removed the dead nest. I wanted to post here that I read that hornets are VERY territorial. So much so that they won't make a nest within about 250' of another one. They also won't try to re-inhabit a dead nest. For these reasons I left the nest up. We'll see if it keeps them away.
