I live about 40 miles to the west. I've worked there a little in the distant past. My son worked there for a year or 2 three or 4 years ago. He didn't live there but really didn't like the down. It seems to be a more or less typical small/mid-sized eastern NC town. I haven't looked them up but it probably has pretty grim demogaphics. Weatherwise, I can just about guarentee a miserably hot & humid August & a usually snow free, relatively mild winter. Should be an inexpensive place to live & it's not far from the beach. I'm not aware of much going on culture wise, but I haven't looked either. You can get good BarBQ there & would probably have a good choice of Baptist or Methodist churches to attend.

only if you like vinegar based BBQ... you'll need to head west if you want tomato based

I like it either way,but you're right about no tomato or mustard based sauce there.

Every few years I get to go there for a project and I enjoy the trip. You are correct about the BBQ. The area is very flat and prone to flooding if you get near the river. The area is also heavily agricultural, which I love because I was once in agchem R&D. There is a good bit industry there and I think they are getting an Airbus plant.
