This tub drain is leaking from the joint between the drain shutoff and the cast iron. It is not a very tall tub.

Is it because the water was filled above the drain shutoff/overflow drain? I assumed this shutoff was capable of being submerged.

with a major mold sensitivity in the house, now I have this below it

I would prefer to fix this once even if the fix is behavioral.

Mine was leaking from the overflow, turns out there is a rubber gasket behind it that was not sealing well. Maybe your shutoff is similar?

In reply to EvanB :

That is exactly what I am planning as next step. Just curious if the assembly is intended to remain above the water level.

Yes, it is.  On some fixtures there was actually a spill channel (?) that let water that high drain into the tub drain.

Like this:

And maybe there is supposed to be a gasket between the chrome part and the tub and also a gasket between the pipe and the tub like this.

It's definitely the drain stopper lever AND an overflow drain assembly. I suspect the gasket and bolts weren't tightened quite enough. Contractor who gutted and remodeled the bathroom last year has already been here and will make things right. Quite refreshing.

Only thing I know about bath tubs is I sometimes think about taking my toaster with me.....
