Someone commented that it was a strange little town. I have to work there for a few weeks. At night. In an industrial area. Any experiences there?

Strange little town is about right. It's very much old Florida, with all of the plusses and minuses that entails. Expect lifted trucks and rednecks, but also southern charm. Now mix in a private university smack dab in the middle full of rich Northeasterners who are very liberal. It's a very interesting dynamic, especially since that school has been growing each and every year.
We just had dinner there Saturday night. Not sure what it's like to live there but, yeah, cool downtown to walk around--way, way better than Daytona, for example.
^^ If you are into live music, check out Cafe DeVinci, they always have something cool going on. Deland has a quaint little downtown. It's a nice place to visit. They have frequent car shows / art shows and other gatherings in the downtown area. Away from the downtown.....there isn't much to see.
Yeah, someone at Cafe DaVinci must like old school punk. We recently saw the Dead Kennedys there. (And I don't care if Jello isn't with them, it's still the rest of the gang and they totally killed it.) A while back, I saw The Adolescents and Youth Brigade there. I was so close to the stage that Steve Soto almost bopped me with the headstock of his bass.
