pinchvalve: That kind of camera never appealed to me. I'd rather be able to pick the right lens for the situation. Most of those superzoom point & shoot cameras come with rather slow lenses. Being able to grab an f1.4 50mm lens for low light & portrait work alone is worth it.
Tony: The Pentax lens situation is a thing although most people's wants seem to be covered. There are some gaps but not really at the crop body, enthusiast level. I don't mind shopping for used equipment, though, which helps somewhat.

Nice...my girls were into riding a few years back. One gravitated to dance and the other devoted most of her spare time to soccer. The horse phase was pretty cool. Now the soccer player is ready for some HPDE experiences....looking forward to that! But I digress......I am pulling the trigger on the d3300. Your point on the lenses was very valid. Thank you. The D3300 is a solid choice. One additional suggestion is to pick her up a backpack style camera bag. They're so much nicer and convenient than the old style bags. We got a fairly basic Lowepro model and it's served her well.
