Last time I had to do a dog's nails out was clippers only. Now I've gotten a nail grinder. Bob and I would really love it if I didn't grind them too far. This is after round one. I think I took off about 1/8th inch. Do I need to take more or is this good?
Go 1/8" at a time once every 3 weeks until his nails don't click when he walks. The quick will move up as the nails are shortened.

Long walks on concrete will also help lengthen the time in between nail grindings
Ok cool. We do about a mile a day of walks on road. We just did a walk and I noticed less clicky. Almost like a stealth Bob.
Man, my brain went into overdrive thinking you and Bobzilla are into some weird E36 M3.
In reply to Appleseed :
Well we are but this isn't related to that.
I find it easier to see based on the underside of the nails

Dude. Knowing Bobzilla owns land in fl made this so much weirder than you know
Is that dirt in his nails?
I'd stop right there but I'm a little chicken about this stuff. I have hit the quick and it's not a fun situation.
On my phone it looks like that's the quick (with maybe a little dirt), so I wouldn't go any shorter for a while.

I agree, that's as far as I would go. I also agree with the suggestion that you look at the bottom of the foot/distal end of the nail.
It's much better to leave a bit more than quick him even once. That association with pain is best avoided.
Also, as you use the grinder, be very careful to avoid getting the nail hot.

Yup. Came here to say this. Once you get to the dark dot in the middle, stop unless you're really good at what you do. Otherwise you might have a bloody carpet and a dog in a lot of pain.
I hit the quick once. My dog refuses to let me trim them again. If she sees the clippers and I touch her paw, she screams and runs, and she's an otherwise silent pup.
Curtis is right, a lot of dogs won't give you a second chance if you quick them.
