Mrs. DX has a conference in Gettysburg, PA this weekend and i'll be fending for myself. Anything I should check out? I know there is Gettysburg Brewing Company and a huge flea market around town tomorrow. I'm bringing my bicycle to do some exploring also. Any good routes or trails to check out? I have a touring bike with knobbyish tires. Anybody in the area want to ride?
I understand there is a battlefield or something there.

Corvair Ranch is nearby, lots of Corvairs! Latimore Valley Fairgrounds is hosting Jalopy Showdown on Saturday. Swap meet, car show, vintage dirt track racing and a race car museum. Latimore is north of Gettysburg right off RT15. Carlisle Import Show is this weekend.
I think Eisenhower's ranch is near the battlefield too.
Carlisle import show. Done.
Well, there's...uh...um...that's all I got. Gettysburg is basically middle-of-nowhereburg. Carlisle isn't all that far, so if you don't mind the ride out, that would be a good trip.
Go to the tower... Ohh wait they blew it up.

Get a tour guide. Go tour the battlefield.

Seriously. It's pretty fascinating stuff, IMO. And you can drive/ride around to all the significant areas on your own or take a guided tour. We did it ourselves. Everywhere you turn there's a monument to some company or batallion that fought on that spot. And of course there's a visitors center/gift shop, too. I could have spent a couple of days just on all that stuff, but I'm a pretty big history buff.

The battlefield is a great place to visit and if you have time ride south to Emmitsburg and check out my Alma Mater! MSM class 1975. Emmitsburg is also home to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial -

A bit further south is Camp David -- unless he has changed the name of that.
btw it's a different type of import show:

I don't doubt that one second Tom.
Several years ago, I finished a project in Hampstead MD early and had several hours to kill before I ahd to catcha plane. So I drove to Gettysburg. I spent quite a while there, looking from the starting point of Pickett's charge and from Little Round Top. I had an ancestor that was on the battlefield and I have the weapon he is supposed to have carried. Its a pretty surreal place.

If you have any interest in dirt track racing the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) is a fascinating place. Small museum but a friend and I spent 4 hours going thru it.
There is the auto museum in Hershey and of course the candy place. There is also the Penn Central RR museum if your into trains at all.

Agreed. A sacred place, even. Study the history first, then when you go, it'll mean that much more to you.
Sacred place. It really is.
My wife and I took the bus tour. We had ear phones for the audio. When we drove along cemetery Ridge, they played battle sounds depicting the charge.
It brought tears to my eyes.

No such thing. Are you thinking of the RR Museum of PA? That's in Strasburg, and not exactly close by. It is an excellent museum though.
The AACA museum is in Hershey.

My wife and I did the whole battlefield thing a few years ago.We found it tremendously interesting and we're not Americans. The significance it holds comes through when you tour the whole battlefield and take the time to go through the museum and read all the info. It is an emotional place.
I ended up walking around the huge flea market in downtown Gettysburg this morning and went into the Michaux State Forest and rode some trails. I think the battlefield would be a good idea for a day trip when there is more time. I'm going to visit that eastern racing museum tomorrow before heading home.
You are in Gettysburg and you don't visit the battle field.
Shame on you.
