No, seriously. I've been a fan of tequila for many many years. Just thinking it's time to step up to a good tequila. Suggestions?

Don Julio Anejo is one my favorites.
I also got to try Don Julio 1942 this past weekend. It was amazing, but it's way beyond top shelf @ $120ish per 750.
Umm... yeah. that's a bit above my price range. I mean, I paid $19 fr my last 1.75L
I'm not afraid to spend $40-50 for a decent (small) bottle to try.
If you ever get the chance, El Tesoro Paradiso is amazing stuff. I'd take it over the Don Julio at the same price.
Look at the Casa 1921 line, either the reposado or anejo.
What are you planning to do with it? For margarita i use any of the 100% blue agave ones. for sipping I like the ones metioned above
Another endorsement of Don Julio here.
Patron is to tequila what Taco Bell is to Mexican food.
Almost as gringo as Corona.

Jose Cuervo is Taco Bell tequila--Patron may be 'gringo' but at least its a quality product. My sister-in-law is from Mexico and has shared some pretty good stuff, but they're not brands available here in the states. My go-to affordable tequila is Milagro.
I am a fan of 1800 Repsado, not the greatest, but I like the taste. Don Julio is good too. I don't like Patron, IMHO over priced and over-rated. It is the Absolute of Tequila (popular but tastes like the stuff in the plastic bottles.)
After checking Patron it is over priced and over rated, Only one Patron product bested one Jose Cuervo product
If it has a sombrero for a lid, run away.
That said 1800 is pretty good but I just use it for margaritas.
I still have cheap tequila (and rum) for mixing. I'm looking at for a "sipping tequila". Like I would with a good Bourbon if they didn't make me inherently angry while drinking them. Since tequila makes me "happy", I tend to stick with it.

The inexpensive Cuervo, Sauza and Montezuma tequilas that most people are familiar with (and are the well drinks at most restaurants) aren't actual tequilas, but are cut half and half with vodka and taste a lot different. The Curvo products listed in the rankings are 100% agave, and totally different than what I was referring to as 'taco bell tequila'.
My go to drinking tequila is Espolon Reposado. It is inexpensive so I don't feel like I am going to go broke drinking it. Last bottle I bought was $22. I need to branch out it some of the higher priced tequilas.
Edit: It is definitely better then Patron in my book. Patron is underwhelming at best.

This I knew. I had a bottle of the clear "especial" a few years ago that tasted MUCH different than the cheap cuervo I've had since.
Milagro, El Jimador, Cazadores, and Herradura are pretty solid for their pricepoint. Tequila seems to be a bit like Scotch, in that you need to spend some money to get into the serious stuff.
And speaking of spending money, if you have a chance to try any of the Del Maguey mezcals, jump on it. They're single-village varieties, and there's quite a difference in flavor profile between them, but they're all really delicious.

I had a shot of something fitting that description last Thursday. I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new boozes and that was one of the very worst I've had so far. I could taste it until just before lunch time the next day. Pepe Lopez tasted better than that stuff. Tonight, I'm going to try the other worm containing bottle they had hidden under the bar.
Cazadores Reposado is the moderately priced tequila that I always have around. I really enjoy sipping it. I also have a bottle of both Espolon & Milagro Reposado sitting around, but I still prefer the Cazadores.
I understand that these high dollar tequilas may taste better but come morning will they leave the same amount of "shame and regret" as the cheaper stuff?
I have some Ilegal Mescal and Partida Familia Tequila Blanco on the way, its time to try something new.

Couldn't agree more. These were the gateway into my mezcal adventures. I have a bottle of the Chichicapa here and damn is it good stuff.
For those of you who are into sipping fine liquor, if you're ever in NYC, you must stop by and see my friends at The Brandy Library. A great place to expand your horizons.
