Odd, because that's what we call Chicago. "I'm going to the city," and everyone in Chicagoland knows where you're going.
See, that's not quite the same. There are implied capital letters in the New York version, that are very audible in conversation.
It's never "I'm going into the city." It's "I'm going into The City."
Isn't The City in the middle of greater London?
If we were in Britain perhaps, but on this side of the Atlantic no.

I grew up in "Western" NY, and we always called it "Upstate"; to us, that simply meant "not NYC", or perhaps more accurately, "Real New York".
I'm questioning whether y'all are even actually from New York. 97% of the people I know from within 200 miles of Manhattan just refer to it as 'The City', as if it was the only city on the planet. None of this New York City or NYC stuff.
That's because where I grew up was more than 200 miles from NYC. New York is a freaking surprisingly huge state. I live in Maryland right now, and its a far shorter drive to NYC from where I live now that from where I grew up. Hell, I never even visited NYC until I moved out of New York. Canada - a whole other country - was more relevant to my day-to-day life than whatever was going on down in NYC.
Hope they don't have night landings .....

There is/was a webcomic called Skin Horse that was about a severely underfunded government agency whose job was to deal with nonhuman sapients and place them in society.
One of the plot lines involved a mad scientist's plot to take a human, place his consciousness in a simulation, then extract his brain and use it to pilot an Osprey, with him thinking that he was just playing the latest VR video game. When he found out what happened, and he pointed out that as a pacifist he could not tolerate fighting ACTUAL battles, he tried to get help from the agency, who pointed out that he was outside their jurisdiction.
After a while, he came to accept the fact that he was a V22, at which point he was legally a nonhuman sapient and they could help him...
