They literally can't build a new train line in California for billions...
It depends on who "they" is. Brightline says theirs will be done by 2027, and they already have another one running in Florida.

Nice that you are here
Not entirely sure what that means. I moved to SoCal a while back. Not up in the rainy part of the state any more.
Obligatory meme.

I was discussing overhead catenary with one of the civil guys at the RR I work at. He said they'd just gotten quotes to electrify one section of track at a yard to move electric locos in and out on. The cost? $2300 per foot (yes, per FOOT) of wire. Note that this is just the cost of stringing catenary- it does not include actually powering it with 12kV, nor the cost of, you know, the actual tracks the choo choo needs to roll on.
I love me some trains, but damn, they are not cheap.

I have joked for years about legally changing my name to None of the Above and running for office.
You'd have won a recent primary in Nevada!
Jay_W said:Wait what? 12,144,000 a mile???? Yikes...
Yup. The stretch of track in question was a total of about 2 miles of catenary, and the quote was 26M.
Oh yeah, and then, for E36 M3s and giggles, go ahead and call your friendly local utility company and tell them you need 12kV service.

In one google search I find multiple groups and individuals that are still attempting to stop it, several attempting to defund it entirely, legal fights stretching back decades (some whos entire purpose was just to tie up courts), and even alternate projects who's purpose (supposedly) was to sap billions in funding from completing it.
Eventually, it's not just the state that's the problem. But I don't know why a train- adjacent joke set someone off.
I wonder if people in the 50s had the same attitude towards the Interstate highway system as we do high speed rail?

Enough of these chubby Taylor Swift edits
Mostly because I'd still hit it
