He likely wanted copper nickel alloy - much more corrosion resistant the coated steel lines. Adopted by Volvo in the 70's, and a bunch of other OEMs since.
Saw this when filling up yesterday - first one I've seen in the flesh.

Even if that were the case it would be more of an issue of "Oh no, these will rust out in eight to ten years instead of never."

I own a few 9mm semi autos.
I took my CCW class with the shortest barreled one, an LC9 with a 3.12" barrel.
5, 7 and 10 yards, 21 rounds, 7 at each yardage.
In February.
In Illinois.
It was around zero degrees. No degrees, at all!
