Have you looked around on the road lately? They are spot on. There is even an Outback in my own garage. Wifey loves it.
Every other car around here is a Subaru. Owned a few and loved them and so has everyone else I know with one.
In my area you would have to add the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 to the list. They seem to be selling a lot of them here.
Yeah, of the 4 friends I know who have bought new cars in the past 6 months all 4 bought subarus
1 = WRX to outback, 2 = mini to cross trek, 3 = elantra to outback, 4 = civic to cross trek

CR isn't "out to lunch", they just cater to a different audience than us.

It didn't used to be that either. At one point it seems Subaru was considered much higher here than it currently is. Same thing for MINIs.
Don't know about other places, but at least around here, they're moving a lot of Subarus.

We don't hate them, we just realize that they all have blown head gaskets.

To be fair, there is a general hatred of VAG products here as well.
I don't love my subaru. I don't hate it either.
I look at it reasonably. It has a job to do. It does the job well. Other cars have tradeoffs for the task at hand. This one's tradeoff is mediocre fuel economy and maintenance costs. 180k hard miles, so to be expected.
I think this board is quick to point out the negatives of anything, as we all have add, and enable one another. We have to constantly remind each other why some things suck so we don't buy EVERYTHING.
OTOH - around here you can find an inordinate amount of love for Yugos, Ladas and other oddball cars the general public would run away from screaming.
No hated here. Wife and I have moved from Buicks and Fords to Subarus. Seeing that there dealers for most all makes within 15 miles of us and we each spent at least 4 full days looking and test driving, I think we made some good choices.
It was a survey of CR readers, and it came back with 3 Toyota and Honda sedans, and 7 Japanese and Korean CUV's. What is to be surprised about. We are not the average car buying public.
Back on the subject of subarus, I have no desire to DD one above a challenge budget unless I can't live without AWD.
The only people I know who have trouble with their Subaru's are enthusiasts. To be fair to Subaru, they build appliances and people treat them like sports cars.
My screen name is after a Subaru.
I am the only person to have ever won the award at the Challenge for the fastest Subaru.
For a short while, my SVX was the world's fastest SVX.
We have had at least 2 Subarus in the stable for over 16 consecutive years.
No hate here. But I do wonder sometimes if I am a lesbian.

Again, we don't hate them, we just realize that all of them have a CEL on and run on Cheat Mode!
Subarus are awesome. Utilitarian, tough/durable (yea yea yea, the headgaskets leak and people who should have half a brain can use this thing called "google" to realize a tune should be mandatory when buying one even if it is stock), offer something nobody does for the price (awd) and return decent mpg for what they are.
A brand new WRX is $30kcdn out the door. For a 250hp, awd, 6 speed manual car with a direct injected turbo motor that gets 30usmpg on the highway. And I love the boy-racer look so double bonus
In reply to HiTempguy:
Why in the berkeley would I "need" a berkeleying tune on my brand new car hair to keep it from eating headgaskets or worse?!
Why is this acceptable on a product that cost $30+k?!
Not too mention Subaru now has the right to void your warranty due to your "tune" and now your $30k Subaru is junk.
