It didn't used to be that either. At one point it seems Subaru was considered much higher here than it currently is. Same thing for MINIs. Don't know about other places, but at least around here, they're moving a lot of Subarus.

I'm not sure, seems a lot of people here have always hated MINI.

I'm 50 50 on my subarus. My 2001 legacy was a nice car, seemed solid and was ok fun to drive. My 2009 5 door manual was a floppy terd. It didn't even have a factory rear swaybar! My rolling anachronism Jeep even has a rear swaybar! Joey

Gotta' admit that CR is probably spot on because most folks aren't enthusiasts and a large percentage of the enthusiasts are younger and don't have a lot of disposable income.

My immediate family (including current household) consists of 8 drivers and there are 4 Subies (counting my FR-S as a Subie as it was manufactured by Fuji Heavy Industries), 2 Toyota Blandry's (Camry's), 1 Honda CRV, 1 Nissan 350z, and 1 Toyota Celica...

I don't know a single person, outside of the internet, that currently or has ever owned a Subaru.

I see them occasionally out on the road so I know they are not something the internet just made up to troll me.

You don't own a car. Your opinion is moot.

You may not like the car, but that doesn't negate its popularity.

It's not something real people discuss in polite discourse. We hide them away, like that helper bottle of vodka behind the pancake mix ... or the pump keg of anal lube in the hall closet. Lots of people have them. They are just not proud of it.

I would chalk it up to to CAR(as opposed to SUV) buyers in Texas being less interested in AWD. Now up in the snow belt it is a different story.

Forget Subaru, it had the Toyota Highlander on the list. The only list that thing has a right to be is #1 on the top 10 of most soul destroying, unreliable, detestable pieces of E36 M3 that make you crave autonomous vehicles.

You're an outlier, ours and others have not had any of the issues yours had. Sorry, but you're statistically insignificant.

Just changed the front wheel bearings, struts and lower balljoints on our 2001, first time they've been changed and it has over 200K. Going to replace the radiator while I'm in there since its also got 200K on it as it is getting black on the tanks and summer is coming. Need to do tie-rods and sway bar end links, but they aren't bad yet, just preventative maintenance.

Its just a jacked up Camry and at that Toyota excels at building them. I'm not saying its exciting, but its comfy, stable and reliable. It is the definition of an appliance.

Compared to the 740iL we inherited, with slightly fewer miles on it, but has needed the entire suspension rebuilt, barely runs on all 8 cylinders, has a mysterious battery drain and broken power seat gearboxes. All of which are common problems (among others) that are well documented online for that car. That doesn't mean I damn all BMW's because of this particular POS that was foisted on us, it just means I'm not terribly interested in them.

My co-worker bought a new WRX with the DI motor. He loves it, but he's also not quite right in the head :)

We have a Highlander sneaking up on 160,000 miles with no major problems so far. That said, I dislike Toyota more than I dislike Subaru.

Subaru both sponsors and dominates in Stage Rally and RallyCross. Two sports that may be called grassroots and motor...

Aside from a piece of crap core design that requires 2 exhaust manifolds, 2 cylinder heads and is inherently inferior

You mean, kinda like a pushrod V8...?

Our Turdbota Scumlander was hands down the worst car we've ever owned. Now yes, I never wanted it so hated it on principle from the moment we got it, but it was total E36 M3. List of problems in 3 1/5 years 100K miles from new.

HEadlamps melted. Yup really. They accused us of putting in higher wattage bulbs, no we didn't. Wife bitched out the service manager on that one
Floor mats wore holes through them in less than a year. Cheap E36 M3
Soft touch material on IP wore through in 18 months leaving sticky ugly mess
Paint was so thin I think it had a negative thickness, would scratch and stain if you looked at it, heaven forbid a fly splat staying on more than 30 seconds or it was there for life.

OK you say, I'm being picky, that's all cosmetic. But wait there's more.

Brake booster failed
Brake master cyl spring a leak
Steering I shaft wore out and needed replacement in less than 30K miles
Rear wheel bearings went at less than 100K miles
HVAC head unit went on the fritz around 90K miles meaning random freezing cold or piping hot air alternating at while and totally ignoring the position of the controls. That would have been a dash out and $1,000 part so we lived with it until we traded it.

OK you say, so we had a Friday afternoon build with by some bazillion to one chance a series of parts that were also built on Fridays just before hitting the bar. Well these more that indicates systemic issues.

The center bearing went out on the drive shaft (ours was AWD) the part from the dealer was stupid money, a full driveshaft assy for something well over $1K. So I called around every junk yard in SE Mi. Many had them, nut when I asked them to check the center bearing they all came back on the phone to tell me it was shot after all. I eventually found a place that claimed to have four good ones in stocks so I went up there. Guess what all failing. In the end I took the one with the least play and fitted that. It was way quieter than ours such that the average person wouldn't notice, I then traded it the next week.

I know Toyota do make reasonable cars. I just think the reputation they have as being superior to everything else is completely unjustified. They also make such lowest common denominator junk it's laughable. They are making what the domestics were derided for building 20 years ago but getting a free pass from it.

I'd rock a gen I MR@, an 80's Supra or Celica, but anything is the last 20 years is an admission someone has given up on life.

I was excited when they launched Scion and went to drive the Tc with high hopes. What I found was a heavy dull driving POS that was designed to appeal to kids who thought they wanted a sports car but subconsciously lusted after mommy’s minivan
