Thank you. It seems a fairly large percentage of members here delight in the unprovoked bashing of anything religious. Interesting that the atheists here are so fervent about their "religion" that they want to cram it down everyone else's throats. I hope they can see the irony.
Making fun of religion(s) is not the same as having one. I don't see anyone trying to sell anything... just making relentless, unproved fun isn't ironic at all.

That's just an observation from one who doesn't subscribe to either of the above afflicitons.
If you go back to the beginning of the thread, you will see that you are the first one that mentioned anything about religion, besides the article.
Everyone else took it as the lighthearted prank it is.
Just saying.

yes, sir, you are. Kudos.
You don't spend three years fighting for a special licence going through psychological evaluations for a light hearted prank. Mr Alm was in it for the long haul.
The church of the flying spagetti monster is a serious statement, albeit delivered with humour. I really like their challenges to Kansas and Florida on the forced teaching of christian creationism.

Wait, what? I always thought that sort of thing was something we (as in Canadians, for instance) made fun of but wasn't true. Hell, even in the catholic system here in Canada they don't teach that bullE36 M3

It's been attempted by highly conservative public school boards, but it's always been struck down.

Wow, so I'm the first agnostic to flounder a thread with religious overtones?

ROFL!
oldsaw, you actually sound like my SWMBO. She calls herself an "apathetic agnostic" (her own words: "..don't care if it's possible to know, and I don't give a M3 BMW E36 either way!"), and constantly teases me that she cares less about the subject of the supernatural than I do..because I actually bother to claim a side!
Gotta admit, tho..considering the "side" I'm on, I thought the Austrian guy was hilarious. The whole FSM thing started as a protest against creationism in public schools by the same folks that created the "Speak Like a Pirate Day" thing. Never thought Pastafarianism would end up as big as a "parody religion" like the Church of the Sub-Genius.
I know we probably disagree about how funny this is, but it still won't keep me from buying ya a beer one day!
Can I get a "Ramen" brother!

No, it's true. Here's the .pdf from a case in 2005.
http://www.pamd.uscourts.gov/kitzmiller/kitzmiller_342.pdf
There are still trials going on elsewhere. In fact, the whole FSM thing was invented to protest fundamentalists in the US attempting to have ID added to public school curricula. Here (from their own archive) is the letter that started the whole thing.
http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/
My daughter was actually a student in this public high school system when this was going on:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selman_v._Cobb_County_School_District
She was the only one who passed her Biology class with anything less than a C (she scored an B+, even with her amazingly sloppy "come-from-behind-in-the-last-week-of-classes" study habits). At the conclusion of the year, her teacher actually asked her, "..which one of your parents is an atheist?.."
I'm not posting this up to blast religious folk, I just thought perhaps I could share some light on the history of the "Pastafarians", and perhaps get some folks to think about why some of us "cranky atheists" get so cranky sometimes..after all, the fundies were aiming at my kid with some of that stuff.
Hell, as funny as I think the FSM stuff is..I never saw it turning into anything larger than a local protest against School Board behavior. I'm just as amazed as anyone else.
EDIT: forgot the linkie to the FSM folks' original letter where they started the joke. Inserted in context (I hope)

I live in PA... where the whole ID thing got laid out in front of a judge who actually paid attention to facts. You would not believe how the uninvolved locals reading the byline in the news all saw it as an affront to their individual, different beliefs. It was like a swarm of the ignorant against truth based on fragmented quotes from the press. I used to wonder how book burning and the murder of "intellectuals" seemed to manifest itself in every revolution.
Now I just encourage everyone to read Carl Sagan's Candle in the Dark and stockpile ammo for the day when we finally cross the threshold of madness. (kidding... I stockpile ammo because I like the way it looks next to my oiled, naked manhood)

So, the article is opposed to religion, everyone agrees with it but doesn't specifically use the word "religion" and therefore are not making religious commentary? How does THAT work?
Not everyone else took it as a lighthearted prank. Some of us have to work very hard to say nothing while others ridicule and make fun of us.

In what way is the article opposed to religion? I don't read that into it at all. The closest to that is the paragraph explaining the origins of Pastafarianism.
Some of us have to work very hard to say nothing while others ridicule and make fun of us.
But you make is so easy!

No. You said the article was opposed to religion. You need to explain that now, if only so that we can all laugh at you more.

Dude, that was cold. Let the man talk, OK? Otherwise we got a BIG flounder on our hands.
SVreX, all I have to say is, I think people find it ridiculous when religion gives somebody special privileges. I'm catholic (a bad one), but nobody gives a crap about me as I don't push my religious views on others. It's my faith, so meh.
For example: for the longest time in Alberta, hutterites did NOT need government issued photo ID, as it was against their religion/faith/whatever to be photographed.
I think FINALLY, it was deemed ridiculous and if those guys want to drive, they have to get a picture taken. It's silly that just because they felt part of their "soul" was taken by a picture (ridiculous) that they couldn't have one taken for their ID. Hopefully somebody got smart there and photographed somebody with a 5 frame per second DSLR camera and waited until they set on fire
Edit-
Photoshopped flounder is photoshopped. Son, I am disappoint :(

Oh, I saw it..I was just trying to lighten the mood.
I'm serious about letting Svrex talk, tho. The man is not an idiot, and continuing this discussion while simply ridiculing what he'd have to say without reading it first is stupid. IMO, "knee-jerk reactions" aren't good. How many times have you had to ignore your animal instincts to keep the car on the road? For me, it's a constant battle. Every time someone hits the horn, I have to remember to hold the wheel steady.
