Historical accuracy check: As shown in this photograph taken sometime in the early 70s, you can notice two things: there's no base road that parallels the runway, and that there are two runways, which is what I think you're thinking of.

The closest thing to a parallel road that I remember is on the lower right of that picture. It was from the "freedom bird" terminal towards the west of the island/base. That was the road we took to get from our barracks to our shop that was over by the roll through wash rack and P3 squadrons.

The AF chow hall was good for sure. We all had comrats instead of a meal card so we didn't stop at the chow hall often. There was a bad ass little restaurant at the P3 hangers called Touch and Go that I went to often.

I think it was the road in the lower right that splits off the road paralleling the coast. It might be just outside the fence, but I was thinking the road was just inside the fence. Crap it was 25 years & many beers ago...

There is a road inside the fence there. That's how I went to work every morning. There typically is a perimeter road around every airbase/air station. I doubt it was put in between the 10-15 years between when you were there and I was there.

As far as protest go, the big one is called Hands Around Kadena. It's a peaceful protest. The cryogenics pad that all of my equipment was held at was just on the other side of this wall.

The Buddhist protest at Gate 2 is the protest that can be bad.

I'm against protesting, I'm just not sure how to show it.

My brother was stationed there in 1970-71 and they hated the US big time. I thought it had calmed down since we gave it back. I seem to recall some of our soldiers behaving badly, but probably not as bad as the Japanese soldiers in WWII.

Hope they are better than the tiny cars were in the 80's. Back then, a beer can was more solid than those cars. Of course the max speed limit was about 35 mph (forgot the kph limit) except on the one toll expressway which was about 50 mph (80 kph IIRC).

35 mph rounds off to 55 kph
