I might try for a vanity plate that says "CHESTER" or "FRE CNDY". I also thought about putting "CANDY" on the vanity plate and then put "free" in vinyl lettering to the left of the plate.

Curtis, you buy more cars than anyone I've ever seen. You need help.

All it needs is external locking doors, to, you know, keep those pesky victims from escaping.

And here's the best part. We just closed on a house 1500 miles away, so I have to move:

  • this van
  • a 65 Scout
  • a 66 Bonneville
  • a 67 LeMans
  • a 96 Impala SS
  • an 03 Sonoma
  • an 05 Scion
  • an 83 Baja boat
  • a 24' enclosed trailer
  • 3 dogs and 2 cats
  • all of the junk from our 2br house
  • a 14' aluminum boat
  • a garage full of tools and equipment that I refuse to part with
  • and if there's room... myself and my wife.

... and I'm probably forgetting a few hundred things. So, when you say "help," are you offering to help move all that stuff?

I've actually been blessed with the insanely frugal gene. I find bargains, drive them for a couple years, and end up selling them for the same price as I paid for them. The Sonoma I might have to sell for a little less, and my F150 I drove for 3 years and lost $250, but for the most part I get lucky. I would honestly say that I haven't "paid" for a car for a long time. When I want something new I just roll money from the sale of one car into another bargain.

In reply to curtis73:

Curtis..how much of that stuff still runs well enough to run that far? I mean..I know the boats & the trailer (with stuff in it?) has to be towed, but what about the 4-wheeled stuff?

Just curious..

this van - will tow the 24' enclosed trailer with the house junk

a 65 Scout - see photo at the bottom.

a 66 Bonneville - currently undergoing a body-off restoration

a 67 LeMans - don't have a picture, but see "scout photo"

a 96 Impala SS - runs very well, but has a chronic flat front right tire due to a bent wheel.

an 03 Sonoma - runs perfectly... it will tow the Baja boat.

an 05 Scion - runs perfectly. Wife will drive it north with the critters on board.

an 83 Baja boat - will be towed by 03 Sonoma

a 24' enclosed trailer - will be towed by 99 E350

3 dogs and 2 cats - aboard the Scion

all of the junk from our 2br house - inside the 24' enclosed trailer (hopefully)

a 14' aluminum boat - haven't a clue, but not in a rush.

a garage full of tools and equipment that I refuse to part with - also in the 24' trailer.

So the current plan is this... Me and my buddy will drive north; me in the van with the 24' trailer and the housewares, him in the Sonoma towing the Baja. Sonoma/Baja stays there. On the return trip we will be swinging by his old place to put his Hyundai and a little 5x8 trailer in the enclosed 24' to bring back to Texas. Once the Hyundai is delivered, I put the chronically flat-tired Impala in the enclosed 24' (along with any miscellaneous leftovers) and head north with the wife and "kids." in the Scion Then, when the body work is done on the Bonny, I will come back to get it (probably sometime in the spring).

As far as the Scout, the 14' boat, and the LeMans... I have no idea yet, but at least they are no rush. The LeMans is at my buddy's property at the corner of No and Where like it has been for 14 years. The Scout and the 14' boat are a similar story.

Honest truth... I seriously looked into buying a Kenworth with a 53' drop deck dry van, but it wasn't worth it. It really didn't offer that much more room as far as vehicle transportation is concerned. Cars are long and not tall, but boxes stack. It looked cheaper to make multiple trips with the van/enclosed trailer than buying that rig.

Here is a photo to give you an idea of the condition of the LeMans and the Bonneville. Not exactly drivable:

Love that.... and it makes total sense if the person following me read this thread. They would understand why I have no cash.

Looking at the Scout reminds me to tell you to be sure you understand PA's inspection laws/rules. I know these are not favorable to rust so getting plates for the Scout in PA could be difficult.
With that said, you may be able to finance some of your moving by bringing with you north each time a very flippable, rust free example of something that could easily be sold in the salt ridden north.

Yeah... Swing by Atlanta and pick up one of those cheap rust free cars we're always reading about here.

Good luck with the move. Sounds like it'll be an adventure.

You might consider putting the boat on top of the trailer. I once transported a Spifire chassis and body on top of an enclosed trailer.

That's not luck Curtis, that's skill. That only happens if you buy the right car at the right price and know how to sell a car. I've seen (and been on) both ends of the spectrum.
BTW, I've always wanted to get a full sized van, put a fake handle on the top and paint it to look like the KISS lunchbox I had when I was a kid.
I'd get a Dodge van though, they look shorter and more like a lunchbox than the Ford or shebby.
