You should turn to her and say:
"Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades, oh no!"
Eggplant rounds oiled and browned on the grill, with a slice of tomato on them and topped with melted mozzerella cheese and a drizle of reduced balsamic vinegar and a sprig of fresh basil....

Yummy!
Oiled, vinegard, charred on the grill is delicious!
Tomatoes were believed to be poisonous in Europe for a long time back in the 1700s or so. IIRC, the stems & leaves (and maybe green fruit?) actually are if you eat a lot of them.

Only to the people who eat eggplant.

That was because they where eating them on pewter plates, which contained lead. The acid in the tomatoes leached the lead out.
Now that I know what a nightshade food is, I realize that about 80% of my meals are nightshade inclusive.
Huh.
Maybe we should start trying to dupe people into the next "superfood" craze.
Did you know that dog kibble is actually a very well-balanced meal replacement? it's got everything you need in a nice, easy package, just grab a handful on the way out the door in the morning.
My wife's uncle's cousin lost 40 lbs just snacking on dog food when he got hungry.

There's some debate on whether it's humanly possible to eat enough tomato leaves to get poisoned from them. Potato stems and leaves are much worse; there's quite a few cases of people getting sick from eating sprouts. Apparently the only part of that plant that isn't poisonous is the potatoes themselves.

The quote is, "Hey, a sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie. But I'll never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy motherberkeleyers."
Yes, I have seen Pulp Fiction way more times than I can count.

If green tomatoes were poisonous the south would be unpopulated. Unless frying breaks down the toxins.

Too bad he got hit by a car last month.
He was sitting in the middle of the road, licking his junk.

Kind of like mushrooms, I guess. Some can be tasty, some can kill you.
Yeah, but the real fun is in walking that fine line between them...
