A little light fare for Sunday... like the title says. Name your favorite comic book hero and/or villain and why.
I'll begin:
Rorschach - The Watchmen
Because he is a relentlessly dark, flawed, complex character. My number #2 has got to be Marv from Sin City. Because he is hilarious, insane and ethical according to his own made-up rules.
Spy vs. Spy.
I consider them one character really. They are symbolic of the inner human struggle. And they make me laugh.
I was big into Marvel comics as a kid during the early 1960s - Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Spiderman, Silver Surfer, Sgt. Nick Fury and His Howling Commandos, and so on. This was when all those characters were in their original configurations, long before any movies or any of that stuff. The story lines were good but I think the thing I liked best was the artwork.
I was also a big fan of Spy vs. Spy as well, read a lot of Mad magazines back then.
Mary Jane ("MJ") from Spiderman. The most beautiful woman ever drawn in a comic. Did I mention I like gingers?
Gotta go with Batman. He's the only person who could end Superman if the need ever arose. If you don't know why, read "The Search for Kryptonite"
I still follow Iron Man, even if Fraction is just phoning in the scripts these days. IM is better written in the Avengers, or anywhere else really.
What more can you say--He's a god! In movie theaters May 6, 2011.
Greatest American ever. In theaters Summer 2011.
The Power Cosmic!
I was an X-Men reader as a kid. Gotta love "everyone's favorite furry blue mutant", The Beast:
He was never one of the big popular iconic characters (no Wolverine for me), but he was a great nerd in a brutish body who had the best wit of any of the characters in that series.
Pretty hard to follow Rorschach, but Alan Moore is pretty good with unexpectedly awesome protagonists.
Not so much of an actual character as a concept, but Project 2501 a.k.a. "The Puppet Master" is a fascinating one either way. The Ghost in the Shell movie merely scratched the surface. He/she/it inhabited this body in the movie, the only image I could find.
I was a DC kid myself. Always liked GL- flawed, and only as powerful as he could will himself to be.
I liked the line in Big Bang, where the boys were discussing Green Lantern, both modern and classic: "So you could defeat both of them with a #2 pencil?"
My favorite has always been Nightcrawler. Don't know why, I just always liked the concept.
What's interesting is a good friend of mine never understood the character until X-Men when it was shown (IMO) what exactly he was capable of doing.
Gotta love some cycle riding demon.
Partly because the parental units disliked it, partly because he was my first glimpse of a true anti-hero.
I am on-board with The Beast, V and Conan but some I'll need to check out. I've never read a Sgt Rock comic and I've never heard of the cycle riding demon.
In reply to Giant Purple Snorklewacker:
You never heard of Ghost Rider? Forget the movie, The early comics with Johnny Blaze rocked!
