Unfortunately for me, I'm not asking which three cars I should buy, although that would be great. Maybe someday.
I'm about to do my first art release. It's going to be a series of three images, each of a car which became an instant classic among us enthusiasts, and remains on the market to this day. Kind of in the hope that my art business enjoys the same success :)
Each car will be drawn from a front view. The only trouble I'm having is narrowing my choices down.
The first drawing, which I'm already working on is an E30 M3. This one I'm sure about. It's a very recognizable, well-respected car. It also meets the requirements of still being on the market several generations later.
But the other two I'm not so sure about. The 1st-gen Miata? GTI? Mustang?
I'd like to know what others would like to see.
Civic fits the bill.
Mustang certainly has a following.
WRX STi might also work.
Very nice cars, but the first-gen Evo and WRXs weren't available in the US.
Should have added that. I'd like to stick to US-released cars for this particular set.

240Z, 911... Keep it to sports cars with round headlights. You can't go wrong with round headlights.
Not exactly iconic but the Triumph Stag has a very handsome front end, 1st Generation RX7, 72 Grand Torino.
All have very unusual and IMHO exciting front end treatments for their day, of course if you insist they still to be produced
Australian Falcon, Mustang and the Lotus Elite
Triumph TR6, Subaru RX Turbo (the true WRX ancestor, which WAS sold here), Alfa Romeo Duetto? cough Mazda RX-3 cough
On a side note, good luck, my girlfriend is 23 with a BFA in illustration from MIAD, and she's having a hell of a time finding work outside of the odd freelance design gig.

Best advice I've heard all day, honestly.
Mustang--instantly recognizable in every form by all age groups.
1st gen Miata--who can resist that cutsey Japanese Animae face? Seriously, it look like it has a face. Really. Go look at one with the lights up.
See any resemblance?
I've been strongly considering the Miata.
I may even use that first pic as reference material.
To fit with the critieria....I'd go with 911, the Z car (my faves are the 240-280Zs) and the Miata. But if not the Z the Mustang.
Mustang, 911, Miata....nice mix of international flavoring.

Mustang and original Mini.
I'm already hard at work on the 240Z
I just need to pick a third now.

Two cars not mentioned that have always been beloved, and are still on the market today are the Land Rover Series/Defender and the Jeep.
I think the 911 needs to be in there.
You have a German and a Japanese, it has to be the Mustang. Plus it gives you a 60's, 70's, and 80's car. Shows nice range.
911
And even though I am not particularly into them, I instantly thought Mustang when reading your original post. Pretty sure it should be there.

Do the 911. Make it an early model, though. I think the Mini and even the Mustang are a bit too cliche, as cool as they are.
Triumph TR3 or Bugeye Sprite would be good, too. Maybe not as iconic as the others, and no longer on the market, but still very recognizable

Hotlinked from Bring-A-Trailer.
Round headlights, produced from 1959-2000, available in a current form.

Not so fast, Lugnut...
That's a 330, yeah? I love those. Old school touring, looks like Aston Martin via Maranello.
