I decided to drive the ol chevy into work today. When I got to work I had a funny smell coming from the rear end. I crawled under it and notice a small wet spot dripping from my drum. After just replacing the rear bearing seals in my wifes car last weekend all the signs were there that is the problem I'm going to confirm this weekend. How much different are the axles back then from today?

You'll have a torque tube connecting the transmission to the rear end. So it's a a little different than a newer pickup. Most swaps would involve fabricating or buying a transmission crossmember and new driveshaft and perhaps different springs/perches. Just a guess, but replacing the bearings would probably be somewhere around $100 in parts.

I was planning On just replacing the wheel bearing seals as long as the bearings were still good. I wasn't sure how different it would be since it's an older truck plus it has drums. I've never worked on drums before and have heard horror stories about changing brake pads and such. A friend told me that I don't have to remove the diff cover to remove the axle? I'm a lil curious.
