Many reasons; the Hilton at Newark/Penn Station is across the street, so it is very close to transport. My brother-in-law also frequently stays at Hiltons so the rate he negotiated was fantastic (like $65/night instead of $454/night in Manhattan).

NYC does not shut down for the holidays. All normal commuter traffic will exist, PLUS Christmas traffic. I would expect that train commute from Newark could consume 2 1/2- 3 hrs every day (round trip).

While I doubt that a 40 minute train ride will become 1.5 hours because of traffic, that is not an unacceptable trade off for us. I just usually stay with friends in Cos Cobb so I'm not familiar with commuting from the west. Coming from Cos Cobb is super simple; one train direct to GC.

If it's just the money, you may want to consider the inconvenience. Also, NYC is wonderful at Christmas, but it is also bitterly cold. Lots of walking in NYC is a challenge, especially for elderly.

To me, staying in a rat-infested tenement Days Inn in Manhattan for $200/night is an inconvenience when I can stay at a luxo Hilton for $65/night and grab a half-hour train.

I wouldn't say mom and dad are elderly. 68 and 69. At least at this point in their health, they are no less affected by cold than I am. Actually probably less because I am a Bob Costas in the cold.
