Did you see Wii Dyno or Wii Sportbike?
Been playing Assasins Creed II during thus break from work. The story/gameplay are freaking awesome.
I paid $70 for my XBox w/ PG1, PG2 & FM1. All used. Nice way to whittle away and hour or so a couple of times a week.

Steam has it on sale for something like $5, right now.

What do you know, it ended up being BETTER than KOTOR (both produced by BIOWARE) and now I have my preorder in for Mass Effect 2 which comes out at the end of january. Oh yea, and that session spanned over 3 days, with very little sleep. It was a blast! You actually got Mass Effect to work? My copy of Mass Effect would crash regularly, too. I made it through the game, but hated it. Loved the story, but got pretty ticked at having the game lock up the console on a regular basis. Then GTA 4 came out and I couldn't go 5 minutes without it crashing. Called up Xbox support and got a warranty claim for free just no Xbox for 2 weeks. They sent me a new console and then at Thanksgiving the new one Red Ringed on me. So, now I'm on my third console, but at least 2 of them were free of charge.
Assassin's Creed 2 is amazing. I spent 35 hours last weekend blowing through it. The roommate let me play it first as a Christmas present to me.
We got our Wii on the cheap from Craigslist. Spent extra for a Used Guitar for Guitar Hero and we're set. Kids have a blast, and I get to cuss regularly at the machine. Works well for everyone.
We got our Wii a while back, when it was still $250 retail and $400 from a private party. The wife uses it more than I do, but I do like the Virtual Console. I'm not a huge fan of ROMs and hacking, so I'd just as soon pay $5 for all of my old games again. I like having games that just work. My NES isn't all that reliable, and I've replaced the cartridge slot already.
We only have 2 controllers, and we tend to get our other peripherals on clearance. The only accessory we've payed full price for was a single "Classic" controller. I use my old Gamecube controllers most of the time.
I am amazed at the cost of some games, though. My wife and I both want The Beatles Rock Band, but we refuse to pay $250 for it, and still need to buy 2 more guitars for the complete set. We'll wait and buy second hand.
We don't have any other current systems, but I'm thinking about getting a PS3 after we buy a house. By that time, the price of the system will have dropped even further, and we'll have a new TV set. Wii on this 10 year old CRT isn't horrid, but even PS2 games are hard to read sometimes.
I realize this has evolved into the social impact of video games, but for me the new Mario game rules and I like my Wii.
So far I've bought a $10 gun for night of the dead (well worth it) and a second controller and I'm set. Never got into the whole guitar hero thing.

Just as a point of information, buying RockBand2 then buying the Beatles game alone is cheaper, and you get both games.
Total expense ever for video games: $13 (used 8 bit Nintendo and 3 cartridges)
Thats it. Video games suck.

Bite your tongue! I'd seriously consider buying a Sega Genesis (my formative console, after the Master System) and a million games if my SO would let me. Maybe once I get the garage insulated/drywalled/wired/heated...*
My only experience with the Wii is through my parents (of all people) and I can say it's a lot of fun. I can see limitations with the system - mainly that 'realistic' experiences are all but out - but the Nintendo-style games are a ton of fun for everybody, and generally well executed. Part of me wants to give kudos to them for figuring out how to market their peripherals so effectively, but proprietary nonsense like that is the reason I gave up on Sony so long ago. Then again, Sony never had a sweet bowing game, so I guess I fall into the pro-Wii camp.
*...I can live out there when she expels me from the house.

Mass Effect crashed on me ONCE, basically after I was on the citadel and was ready to leave (near the beginning of the game). I agree, the loading screens are really nerve wracking but that was the only time I've had a problem.
The peripheries, accessories, and add-ons are the big profit margin items, so if you want to make as much money as possible create a system that requires a ton of them, and make the peripheries, accessories, and add-ons in such a way that third parties can't produce them, a la the Wii. And that my friends, is why Nintendo can print money right now.
