Also, let's look at the semantics of what Palin said: "'What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?"
That could just as easily have been a rhetorical question to gauge the reaction of her librarian.
Maybe she was setting up to ban books later. Maybe she wasn't. Maybe she was thinking of censoring elicit materials and used the wrong term. Maybe she did not initially understand the controversy over banning books but had her eyes opened.
I'm not a Palin fan, but I'm not ready to condemn her on this. It comes close to a line that makes me nervous, but doesn't seem to have fully crossed it. (Believing dinosaurs and humans coexisted does genuinely bother me.)
