One of these days, one of those drivers is going to botch the backflip and land on his face, and it will be posted on Youtube with all the other FAIL videos.

I like original or really awesome celebrations. Like Valentino Rossi standing on his bike's seat (at full speed) and taking a bow after crossing the finish line in 1st place.

But at the same time, I don't see a problem with someone showing their excitement after winning a race. To me, the driver should have to answer to the team about any stupid post race celebration that damages the car. Somehow, I don't think Carl Edwards was in the shop Monday morning banging on his car...

actually, the driver gets paid the money for the all star race.. the owner gets a trophy.. but i'm sure Carl gave his crew a pretty good payday. his little offroad excursion on saturday was a result of a spontaneous decision to do a high speed donut in the grass.. he didn't know about the elevation change... one thing Carl Edwards has started doing lately is pretty neat.. after doing his backflip, he runs up into the stands and celebrates with the fans for a while- but only if there is a gate somewhere in the vicinity of the start/finish line. if there is no gate, he just climbs the fence and celebrates with the crowd from up there.. i think he started doing that when he broke his almost 2 year long winless streak at the end of last year, and it's kind of become his "thing"... after Kyle Busch wins, he gets out of the car and dramatically bows to the booing crowd when he picks up the checkered flag...

Actually, if you watched the post race interview, Carls response to the reporter asking what it was like to win a million dollars was "Well, it's not like I get all of it, the team won the money and I get a share". I think (scary statement) the payout still goes to the team owner just like the "race winnings" do. It may be how the drivers contract is formulated as well.

Drivers often get half if they win. Bad boy Kyle Bush was the one who desroyed the guitar. Looks like Carl was going to do a broad slide through the grass and he didn't know there was a drain there.

I don't see anything wrong with celebrating. The guy (or gal) just did a 3-4 hour race at high speeds and won. They have every right to celebrate.

To me, removing things like that (or endzone celebrations) starts to go down the path of, "let's not celebrate, so nobody get's upset".

For the record, the donuts, and thus the smokey burnout, was first done by Alex Zanardi in ChampCar back in the 90's. It was great, because it was him, and if you knew him and/or his driving style, you understand. He didn't do it for sponsors, or for the show. He did it because he was happy to have won. Everyone else is just a poser wannabe, IMO.

Does anybody remember Panizzi in WRC at a Tarmac Rally about 10 years ago who pulled a single donut in a hairpin towards the end of the race he dominated? That was pretty cool and original. His co-driver wasn't happy though!

Thanks for making me laugh in the middle of a crowded office building. That's hysterical. Just wait...it may happen some day, right in victory lane. It'll give new meaning to the term "burnout"

I DO remember that! It was an awesome and spectacular show for his fans. If I recall correctly, it was his 'home' race, and the hairpin was near a bridge that was very popular for watching and was just PACKED with people. Hi co-driver just stopped reading his notes, looked at him and gave a big WTF look, then continued on once the spin was complete.

Yup, I watched that as it happened. Big crowd pleaser - whipped into the turn, big smoky AWD turbo 360, and out the other side.

That was awesome! The crowd went nuts!

Btw - The driver and co-driver have the same last name. Are they related? I'd make my bro groan via a lurid slide if I could. He'd never give me the satisfaction.

Ha, I remember that, too. And just think, if he celebrated quietly none of us would remember is.

And possibly the originators of the big win celebrations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AduIrDqBtGA

i'd guess it depends on the situation. if the race really means something, and is a big accomplishment, then its warranted.

when i crewed for a kart racer, the club would have non-points fun races, basically a run-what ya brung deal. there was a guy that did some national races and ran a 250cc 6 speed shifter that ran there sometimes. most of the other people ran single speed 125cc TAG or Rotax karts. the guy basically would have had no excuse if he didn't dominate the field in a 15-lap race, even starting in the back. it took him 5 or 6 laps to finally pass my driver and even still didn't win the race by more than half a lap. while the rest of the field made their way back to the pits like they always did, this guy cut donuts all the way down the front straight, and then had to come the wrong way down pit-out to get back into the pits.

that always stands out in my mind as a shining example of d-baggery

See! I told y'all there's a way to do it that's cool for the fans and isn't being a dorkus!

I'm trying to think of any other epic celebrations like that. I do enjoy the NFL guys that give the TD football to a fan and then just go back to the bench. The Lambeu Leap is cool, too.

That Panizzi thing was pretty cool. Not destructive.

I remember seeing Jeff Burton (I think) win a race several years back after all the younger drivers started doing monster burnouts after they won. Burton just took a normal victory lap, and in the post race interview they asked him why he didn't do a burnout. He said something like "Naw, I've got too much respect for the guys that built the car to tear it up like that."

I respect him for that.
